WM 137419 Removing and installing crankshaft sealing ring - belt pulley side
Tools
Technical values
Preliminary work for crankshaft sealing ring - belt pulley side
1. Move driver and passenger seats to the front-most position and fold over the backrests.
2. Disconnect ground strap for battery.
3. Place protective covers in the car to prevent damage and soiling.
4. Remove rear wall lining of rear wall cover -> 555919 Removing and installing rear wall cover - section on "Removing" 555919 Removing and Installing Rear Wall Cover.

5. Remove drive belt. Mark the running direction of the belt with a coloured pen. Slacken the belt; to do so, turn tensioning roller (a/f 24) in a clockwise direction and at the same time, remove the belt from the tensioning roller or the deflection roller, -> 137819 Removing and installing drive belt - section on "Removing" 137819 Removing and installing drive belt.

6. Remove pulley -> 137619 Removing and installing pulley - section on "Removing" 137619 Removing and installing belt pulley.
Removing crankshaft sealing ring - belt pulley side
1. Make a 3-mm hole at the front of the sealing ring using an angle drill. Grease the drill in order to bind the chips caused by drilling. Screw a sheetmetal screw with a washer (5 x 2) approx. 5 mm into the bore hole.
Boring the sealing ring
CAUTION
Risk of damage due to particles of dirt.
- Risk of engine damage.
-> Absolute cleanliness is essential when working on the engine.
2. Position a lever tool on the sheetmetal screw, (e.g. Assembly lever 9182 ), place a wooden wedge between the lever tool and the crankcase and lever out the sealing ring. Carefully remove any residual dirt on the crankshaft flange.
Levering out the sealing ring
CAUTION
The crankshaft flange can be damaged if not cleaned correctly.
- Leaks
-> Never use an abrasive or polishing cloth or brushes with metal bristles.
-> Follow cleaning instructions.
3. If there are corroded spots on the crankshaft flange, clean them off using a metal-polishing pad (e.g. Nevr Dull, available in car and motor bike accessory stores). Then, carefully degrease the flange and crankcase bore using a clean, lint-free cloth that has been soaked in solvent naphtha or acetone.
Information
Visually inspect the crankshaft flange and crankcase bore for damage.
4. Check crankshaft flange and crankcase bore for damage.
Installing crankshaft sealing ring - belt pulley side
Information
- The standard shaft seal is pressed 12.5 mm in, measured from the end of the flange. The new sealing ring is pressed 14.5 mm in using the special tool assembly sleeve 9610/1 in order to generate a new running track.
CAUTION
Sharp tool edges and burrs.
- Damage to the sealing lip.
-> Always examine tools for signs of burrs and sharp edges.
1. Small burred spots or damaged areas on the tools can be eliminated with a nail file, then pull off with a fine abrasive or polishing cloth. Remove residual dirt on the tools, e.g. using solvent naphtha or acetone.
CAUTION
Grease on sealing ring can cause material damage
- Damage to micro-sealing lip
-> Do not oil or grease the crankshaft sealing ring
-> Only coat the crankshaft housing bore with new engine oil
2. Coat the crankshaft case bore with new engine oil and slide the new crankshaft sealing ring with the taper of the assembly sleeve 9610/1 special tool over the crankshaft flange.

3. Fit sealing ring with the insertion device of the assembly sleeve 9610/1.

4. Check that the sealing ring is seated correctly. To do this, measure at four points, offset by 90°, from the belt pulley attachment surface on the crankshaft flange to the sealing ring (outer radius). => Dimension: 14.5 mm
Subsequent work for crankshaft sealing ring - belt pulley side
1. Install pulley -> 137619 Removing and installing pulley - section on "Installing" 137619 Removing and installing belt pulley.
2. Fit drive belt -> 137819 Removing and installing drive belt - section on "Installing" 137819 Removing and installing drive belt.
Installed position of drive belt
3. Connect the ground strap for the battery -> 271000 Work instructions after disconnecting the battery.
4. Start the engine and allow it to warm up (operating temperature) and perform a visual inspection to check for leaks.
5. Fit rear wall cover and rear wall lining, tighten screws and collar nuts. => Tightening torque: 7.5 ftlb.
