Removing and Installing Rear-Axle Carrier Side Section
WM 423819 Removing and installing rear-axle carrier side sectionInformation
Information
Information: Pay attention to the following in order to remove the support plate without tension:
Lift the vehicle only at the jacking points provided using a uniformly adjusted platform lift. Align lifting arms evenly (in order to avoid distortion).
Overview of rear-axle carrier side section
1 - Rear-axle carrier side section
2 - Diagonal brace
3 - Support plate
4 - Cross member
7 - V-brace
Preliminary work
1. Raise vehicle at the specified jacking points.
2. Remove rear wheel.
3. Remove rear underbody panel.

1. Remove the diagonal braces.
Unscrew nuts -2a- and bolts -2b- and remove diagonal braces at the left and right.
2. Remove support plate.
Unscrew nuts -3a- and bolts -3b- and take off support plate.
3. Remove transmission bracket with hydraulic mount.
Support transmission before removing the transmission bracket! When supporting the transmission, ensure that there is no tension on the screws on the transmission bracket -A-.
Unscrew nuts -Arrows- on hydraulic mount -B-.
A - Transmission bracket
B - Hydraulic mount
C - Fastening nut (never loosen)
Hydraulic mount
Unscrew screws -Arrows- on transmission bracket -A- and remove transmission bracket -A- together with hydraulic mount.
Mount for transmission bracket
4. Remove cross member -4- together with sensor -5-.
Sensor:
Unscrew M6 nut securing sensor to control arm and disengage linkage.
Pull off electric connection.
Cross member:
Pull electric plug connections and lines out of the holders.
Unscrew screws -4a- and remove cross member -4-.

5. Remove stabilizer on rear-axle carrier side section.
Unscrew screws -2a- and remove stabilizer -2- by tilting it backwards.
6. Remove eccentric threaded joints (toe and transverse control arm) at rear-axle carrier side section.
Eccentric threaded joint, rear-axle carrier side section
6.1. Remove toe eccentric threaded joint between transverse strut and rear-axle carrier side section.
Mark the basic position of the toe eccentrics on the rear-axle carrier side section -see Arrow-.
6.2. Remove camber eccentric threaded joint between toe control arm and rear-axle carrier side section.
Mark the basic position of the camber eccentrics on the rear-axle carrier side section -see Arrow-.
7. Remove rear-axle carrier side section.
Unscrew screws -3- and remove rear-axle carrier side section.

3. Install eccentric threaded joints (toe and transverse control arm) at rear-axle carrier side section.
Rear-axle carrier side section
3.1. Install toe eccentric threaded joint between transverse strut and rear-axle carrier side section.
Set the basic position of the toe eccentrics at the marked position -see arrow- on the rear-axle carrier side section and tighten nuts.
3.2. Install camber eccentric threaded joint between toe control arm and rear-axle carrier side section.
Set the basic position of the toe eccentrics at the marked position -see arrow- on the rear-axle carrier side section and tighten nuts.
4. Insert support plate and align rear-axle carrier side section.
Insert the support plate and secure it to the following components, see -arrows- :
Rear-axle carrier side section, cross member, V-brace
Align rear-axle carrier side section as required until the hole patterns are perfectly matched. It must be possible to insert the support plate without tension.
Securing support plate
5. Tighten screws on rear-axle carrier side section and cross member.
5.1. Tighten screws securing rear-axle carrier side section to body. --> Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)
5.2. Tighten screws securing cross member to rear-axle carrier side section. --> Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)
6. Install transmission bracket with hydraulic mount.
6.1. Tighten screws securing transmission bracket to transmission.
Mount for transmission bracket
6.1.1. Transmission bracket to Tiptronic transmission
--> Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)
6.1.2. Transmission bracket to manual transmission
--> Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)
6.2. Tighten nuts securing hydraulic mount -arrows- to rear-axle carrier side section.
