WM 427119 Removing and installing rear spring strut

Tools

Preliminary work for removing spring strut

1. Find an access point to where the upper spring strut is attached to the body (three M8 lock nuts).
On the Boxster, this involves moving the convertible top to service position -> 6101IN Convertible-top service position.
Procedure on the Cayman: Remove trim panel for spring strut mount -> 702319 Removing and installing trim panel for spring strut mount . This includes: trim panel for rear -> 705319 Removing and installing rear trim and C-pillar -> 706819 Removing and installing C-pillar trim .

4. Remove rear wheel -> 440519 Removing and installing wheel 44051900 Removing and installing wheel.

Removing spring strut

1. Disconnect plug connections at the wheel carriers and pull out the plugs. Undo plug connection at the wheel carrier (M6 screw) and unclip electric wires at the spring strut.
2. Loosen holder for brake line/brake hose at the wheel carrier. Undo brake caliper from wheel carrier (do not open brake system) and suspend it in the wheel arch.
3. Loosen the drive shaft at the transmission. Slide a protective hose over the drive shaft to prevent damage to the drive shaft.

4. Loosen suspension/stabiliser -1- at the anti-roll bar.

Control arm at wheel carrier

Loosen toe and control arm -2 and 3- on the wheel carrier. Use the press-out tool P 9560 for pressing out the ball joint. When loosening the lock nuts, counter at the ball-joint pin with a screwdriver P 9546 (Torx screwdriver).
To pull the ball-joint pin out of the wheel carrier, pull the control arm down evenly with both hands while swivelling the wheel carrier outwards. Enlist the assistance of a second person for this step.

5. The parking-brake cable must be disengaged at the parking brake lever in the passenger compartment in order to remove the spring strut. Disengaging the parking-brake cable includes:
Releasing the parking-brake lever (do not operate again until fitting is complete! Self-adjusting!).
Opening cover of oddments tray in centre console.
Removing bottom of oddments tray in centre console.
Removing the relevant parking-brake cable sideways out of the turnbuckle.

Removing/fitting parking-brake cable

6. Open clip for parking-brake cable (at the rear wall) and take the parking-brake cable out of the deflector box.
7. Mark the installation position of the spring strut mount (position of the three M8 lock nuts). Undo M8 lock nuts on the spring strut mount -Arrows-.

Attachment of spring strut to body

8. Pull out spring strut with wheel carrier and drive shaft. Make sure that the ball joint boots and drive shaft boots are not damaged during removal and installation.
9. Remove lock nut on suspension/stabiliser -1 and 2- (clamped connection between spring strut and wheel carrier). Pull spring strut -3- out of the wheel carrier -4-.

Installing spring strut

Information

- Always check the parts visually before installation.

- Replace brake caliper fastening screws.

- Do not grease screwed connections in Dacromet finish - aluminium colour!

- Observe correct tightening torques.

1. Install in reverse order.
2. Insert spring strut into vehicle. Before tightening the fastening nuts, adjust spring strut mount in accordance with the applied marking (position of the three fastening nuts).
Then double-check that the support ring is still positioned correctly on the spring strut mount => Correct position for support ring. The cut-outs in the support ring must be positioned between the collars of the three fastening bolts -Arrows-. Re-establish the correct position if necessary.

3. Insert parking-brake cable into the deflector box and into the clip at the rear wall.
4. Engage brake cable sideways into the turnbuckle => Removing/fitting parking-brake cable. Fit floor in oddments tray of the centre console.
The handbrake does not have to be adjusted (self-adjusting).
