Preliminary work

1. Raise the vehicle at the prescribed jacking points. -> 400000 Lifting the vehicle
2. Drain oil for final drive. -> 399055 Replacing oil for final drive - section on "Draining" Service and Repair
3. Remove support plate. -> 421419 Removing and installing support plate - section on "Removing" 42141900 Removing and installing support plate
4. Remove long halfshaft flange. -> 392519 Removing and installing long halfshaft flange - section on "Removing" 39251906 Removing and installing long halfshaft flange

Removing sealing ring

1. Remove circlip for ball bearing.

2. Press halfshaft flange out of mounting saddle.

3. Press sealing ring out of mounting saddle using a suitable tool.

Installing sealing ring

1. Drive in new sealing ring as far as it will go using pressure piece 9615 and pull-in tool and extractor 254.





Tapping in sealing ring

2. Press mounting saddle with assembly sleeve 9263 and thrust washer VW 511 onto the halfshaft flange.

3. Fit circlip.

Subsequent work

1. Install long halfshaft flange. -> 392519 Removing and installing long halfshaft flange - "Installing" 39251906 Removing and installing long halfshaft flange
2. Top up oil for final drive. -> 399055 Replacing oil for final drive - "Topping up" Service and Repair
3. Fit support plate. -> 421419 Removing and installing support plate - section on "Installing" 42141900 Removing and installing support plate
4. Lower the vehicle.
