Preliminary work for removing drive shaft

1. Release axle nut (vehicle on ground) whilst operating the brake (2 fitters required).
2. Raise the vehicle -> 400000 Lifting the vehicle and remove the required rear wheel -> 440519 Removing and installing wheel 44051900 Removing and installing wheel.
3. Remove support plate -A- (this also involves removing diagonal braces -B- ) -> 421419 Removing and installing support plate 42141900 Removing and installing support plate.

Information

- Removal and installation applies to Tiptronic and all manual transmissions.

1. Fit protective tube for drive shaft (shop-made tube to protect against mechanical damage).
Remove drive shafts at transmission side (six hexagon socket head bolts).

2. Use universal drive shaft/wheel hub extractor as of model '86 NR.87-1 to carefully press out the pin of the drive shaft until the shaft can be moved by hand. => Pressing out drive shaft

3. Remove (pull out) drive shaft.

Installing drive shaft

Information

- Screws are Dacromet-coated and must not be greased.

- Grease the toothing of the drive shaft lightly with Optimoly HT.

- To prevent damage to the drive shaft, slide a protective tube (shop-made) over the drive shaft.

- Use new screws and lock nuts.

- Observe correct tightening torques -> 420000 Tightening torques for rear axle.

- Always check the bellows for damage and replace them if necessary if you intend to continue using the drive shaft.

1. Insert drive shaft and fit the axle nut.
2. Fit drive shafts at transmission side (six hexagon socket head bolts).
3. Remove protective tube for drive shaft.

Subsequent work after installing drive shaft

1. Install support plate -A- with diagonal braces -B-. -> 421419 Removing and installing support plate 42141900 Removing and installing support plate.

2. Fit wheel -> 440519 Removing and installing wheel 44051900 Removing and installing wheel.
3. Tighten axle nut (vehicle on ground) whilst operating the brake (2 fitters required).
