WM 425819 Removing and installing rear wheel bearing

Information

Information

Information: The wheel bearings adopt the function of the former ABS pulse rings. They are fitted with a so-called multipole seal. This is a seal with a magnetized layer, which generates the torque impulses for the ABS rpm sensors.

The multipole seal must not come into contact with highly magnetic parts. During installation, make sure that the magnetic side is facing the ABS sensor. Use test card 147-2 for this.

Wheel bearing

Preliminary work

Preliminary work
1. Remove rear wheel bearing housing.

Removing rear wheel bearing

Removing
The following tools are required for removing the rear wheel bearing.

1. Take off brake cover plate on the wheel bearing housing.
2. Press out wheel hub.

Press the wheel hub out using a press-out mandrel P 297a. A separating device ([diameter] = 12 - 115 mm) NR.111 and a suitable support must be used for countering.

3. Remove bearing cover.

Unscrew screws -1- and remove bearing cover.

Removing bearing cover

4. Heat wheel bearing housing to approx. 100°C (max. 120°C).
5. Press out wheel bearing using a tubular piece VW 415 A.

Pressing out wheel bearing

Warning: Hot wheel bearing housing!
^ Danger of burns

--> Wear heat-resistant gloves!

6. Press out wheel bearing inner race.

Information: To press out the inner bearing race of the old wheel bearing, pull the inner bearing race several millimeters off the wheel hub using a two-claw puller so that the separator can be put into place. To do this, use a two-claw puller together with a pressure piece VW 433, for example.

Installing rear wheel bearing

Installing
Before installation, clean the bore in the wheel bearing housing and remove edges with a polishing cloth.

The following tools are required for installing the rear wheel bearing.

1. Press in wheel bearing.

Heat up wheel bearing housing before pressing in the wheel bearing.

Preparatory condition: --> Temperature: 100°C+20°C

Insert wheel bearing at the correct position, then press again on the wheel bearing housing with only slight force using a suitable pressure piece (9247/4), see pressure piece (4 x) P 9247 and tubular piece VW 415 A.

2. Install bearing cover -2-.

Screw in and tighten screws -1-. --> Tightening torque: 37 Nm (27 ftlb.)

Installing bearing cover

3. Press in wheel hub.

Position wheel bearing housing on wheel hub and press on wheel bearing inner race using a tubular piece VW 415 A.
