WM 467915 Eliminating noise symptoms: Adjusting rear brake cable for foot-operated parking brake (FPB) (FPB creaking noise)

General information

Symptom

Creaking noise when actuating the foot-operated parking brake (referred to below as "FPB").

Causes and remedial action

Cause

Tensioning mechanism of the FPB is at the stop.

Remedial action

Tensioning the rear brake cables (left/right) by relocating the brake cable circlips on the wheel bearing housing.

Preliminary work

1. Move control pedal of the foot-operated parking brake to the zero position. To do this, pull the release lever on the dashboard.
2. Remove cover in the footwell => 702219 Removing and installing cover under dashboard - section on "Removing".

Adjusting FPB brake cables

1. Fix the adjustment device using an auxiliary pin (max. dia. 3.5 mm) ( => Figure 1 ). In other words: press the adjustment device together ( -Arrow- ) until the assembly bores are covered and the auxiliary pin can be inserted => 466019 Removing and installing pedal for foot-operated parking brake (FPB) - section on "Removing".
The cover of the pedal must not be removed. The auxiliary pin can be inserted through the cover.

2. Raise the vehicle => 4000V000 Lifting the vehicle.
3. Remove the rear wheels => 440519 Removing and installing wheel - section on "Removing".
4. Pull the sleeve of the cable ( => Figure 2 ) ( -Arrow- ) as far as possible out of the wheel bearing housing.

Figure 2

Information

Brake cable adjustment must be identical on both sides of the vehicle (= circlip in groove 1 or 2).
Adjustment in groove 3 (=> Figure 3 -arrow- ) is not possible.

The brake cable must be replaced if.

- . the circlips are located in groove 2 on both sides of the vehicle and the brake cable has to be tensioned.

- . the circlip is damaged during assembly/disassembly (e.g. bent, stretched) and/or the brake cable is damaged (e.g. porous, chafed).

Figure 3

5. Pull the brake cable so far out that the circlip can be relocated from groove 1 to groove 2 (towards wheel bearing housing) using circlip pliers ( => Figure 4 ).

Information

Ensure that the circlip is properly seated in the groove over the entire circumference.

Figure 4

6. Push the sleeve of the cable ( => Figure 2 ) ( -Arrow- ) back into the wheel bearing housing.
7. Remove the retaining pin for fixing the adjustment device ( => Figure 1 ).
8. Perform a function test. If necessary, set the brake pads to the basic setting => 46831600 Adjusting foot-operated parking brake - section on "Adjusting".

Subsequent work

1. Install cover in the footwell => 702219 Removing and installing cover under dashboard - section on "Installing".
2. Fit the wheels, => 44051900 Removing and installing wheel - section on "Installing" and tighten to the specified tightening torque.
