Component overview
Removing intake-air distributor
V8 naturally aspirated engine M48/01:
1. Loosen connections on the intake-air distributor.
1.1. Disconnect cable plug for heat socket. -1-
1.2. Disconnect positive crankcase ventilation connection on heat socket. -2-
1.3. Disconnect cable plug for throttle housing and remove it from the sheetmetal clip. -3-
1.4. Disconnect cable connection for tank vent line on the intake-air distributor. -4-
2. Unclip rear tank vent line at the wire harness. -arrow-
3. Loosen screws on intake-air distributor. Illustration shows tightening sequence - Tightening sequence for intake-air distributor (shown on naturally aspirated engine) applies to both naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Carefully bend line for tank ventilation out of the way in order to access the screws.
4. Carefully lift the rear intake-air distributor at the shift gate and pull off the vacuum line under the control valve -1- (difficult to reach, use a mirror). Pull off cable plug for control valve. -2-
5. Lift off intake-air distributor.
V8 turbo engine M48/51:
6. Loosen connections on intake-air distributor on the turbo engine in the same way as on the naturally aspirated engine. -1, 2, 3 and 4-
7. Unclip rear tank vent line at the wire harness. -arrow-
9. Pull off vacuum line. -Vacuum line-
10. Lift off intake-air distributor.
Installing intake-air distributor
V8 naturally aspirated engine M48/01:
1. Replace intake-air distributor gaskets.
2. Move intake-air distributor into installation position. Make sure that the gaskets do not slip out of place and that the lines are not trapped.
3. Carefully lift the rear intake-air distributor at the shift gate and connect the vacuum line under the control valve -1- (difficult to reach, use a mirror). Connect cable plug for control valve. -2-
INFORMATION: If screws are damaged, take the intake-air distributor off again and carefully tap out the affected screws with a plastic hammer. Carefully tap in new screw elements with a plastic hammer.
4. Carefully screw in screws on intake-air distributor. Screws must all fit easily. Illustration shows tightening sequence - Tightening sequence for intake-air distributor (shown on naturally aspirated engine) applies to both naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Carefully bend line for tank ventilation out of the way in order to access the screws. Align intake-air distributor with screws tightened slightly and then tighten screws according to the tightening sequence. - Tightening torque: 15 Nm (11 ftlb.)
5. Clip in rear tank vent line at the wire harness. -arrow-
6. Fit connections on the intake-air distributor.
6.1. Connect cable plug for heat socket. -1-
6.2. Connect positive crankcase ventilation connection on heat socket. -2-
6.3. Connect cable plug for throttle housing and secure in sheetmetal clip. -3-
6.4. Connect cable connection for tank vent line on the intake-air distributor connection piece. -4-
V8 turbo engine M48/51:
7. Replace intake-air distributor gaskets.
8. Move intake-air distributor into installation position. Make sure that the gaskets do not slip out of place and that the lines are not trapped.
9. Fit vacuum line. -vacuum line-
INFORMATION: If screws are damaged, take the intake-air distributor off again and carefully tap out the affected screws with a plastic hammer. Carefully tap in new screw elements with a plastic hammer.
11. Clip in rear tank vent line at the wire harness. -arrow-
12. Fit connections on intake-air distributor on the turbo engine in the same way as on the naturally aspirated engine. -1, 2, 3 and 4-
Subsequent work
1. Secure intake manifold on throttle housing.
2. Fit the two oil mist separators.
