Eliminating Symptoms On Body Exterior - Reworking Headlights (Dust/Condensation In Main Headlight)
General information
Symptom
Dust in main headlight and/or main headlight misted up due to condensation.
Cause
- Filter element for headlight ventilation system is not flat/centered or fully sealed in the filter element housing.
- Filter element for headlight ventilation system is very dirty.
- Seal for cover of dipped beam/auxiliary main beam headlight is not centered or fully sealed in the cover.
Remedial action
In the event of a complaint, check the filter element and covers and replace them if necessary.

Reworking headlights
NOTE:
Voltage peaks
- Risk of damage to load or to the control unit
- Remove the ignition key and switch off load before disconnecting or removing load.
Remove main headlight
1. Open front lid.
2. Press cover -1- in engine compartment down in -direction of arrow- and remove it.
3. Slide a socket wrench -5- onto the release for the main headlight -3- and release it in direction of arrow -arrow A- or -arrow B-.
4. Pull the main headlight -1- forward until the connector -2- is accessible.
5. Release the connector -2- ( -arrow A- ) and pull it off the main headlight -arrow B-.
6. Remove main headlight -1- from the wing by pulling it forward -arrow C-.
INFORMATION: The filter element for the headlight ventilation system is located on the bottom of the main headlight.
Check filter element for headlight ventilation system
1. Pull upper part of filter element -1- out of the lower part of the filter element -3- ( -arrow- ).
Leave lower part of filter element -3- on the main headlight.
2. Examine filter element -2- for soiling and leaks and check that it is seated correctly. Replace it if necessary.
3. Check upper part of filter element -1- and lower part of filter element -3- for damage and replace them if necessary.
INFORMATION: Make sure that the filter element is centered in the lower part of the filter element -3-. The filter element must not be kinked.
4. Insert a new filter element -2- ( -arrow- ).
5. Fit upper part of filter element -1- on the lower part of the filter element -3- and press it in securely -arrow-.
6. Check that the upper part of the filter element -1- is seated securely.
Remove cover on dipped beam/auxiliary main beam headlight.
7. Release cover on dipped beam headlight -1- at the two clips -arrows A-.
8. Swivel the cover on the dipped beam headlight -1- out of the guides on the main headlight and remove it -arrows B-.
9. Release cover on auxiliary main beam headlight -1- at the two clips -arrows A-.
10. Swivel the cover on the auxiliary main beam headlight -1- out of the guides on the main headlight and remove it -arrows B-.
Check cover on dipped beam/auxiliary main beam headlight.
11. Check the seal -1- on the cover -2- to ensure that it is seated fully all the way around.
If the seal is pinched or damaged -arrows- , replace the cover.
Install cover on dipped beam/auxiliary main beam headlight.
12. Fit cover for dipped beam headlight -1- down into the guides on the main headlight and swivel it up -arrows A-.
13. Press cover for dipped beam headlight -1- onto the main headlight until the two clips engage securely -arrow B-.
14. Fit cover for auxiliary main beam headlight -1- down into the guides on the main headlight and swivel it up -arrows A-.
15. Press cover for auxiliary main beam headlight -1- onto the main headlight until the two clips engage securely -arrows B-.
Install main headlight.
16. Insert main headlight -1- into the guide rails and push into the wing -arrow A- until the connector -2- can be plugged in -arrow B-.
17. Push main headlight -1- all the way back into the wing -arrow A-.
18. Press the main headlight to the rear and, at the same time, turn the socket wrench -5- in direction of arrow -arrow A- or -arrow B-. In the process, the headlight lock -3- must engage with an audible and perceptible click.
19. Check that the main headlight is seated securely.
20. Insert cover -1- and fold it over -arrow-.
