Checking Battery With Battery Tester

Checking Battery With Battery Tester

Technical values

Preliminary work

INFORMATION:
- No loads (e.g. opening doors, switching on light/radio, etc.) may be activated while the vehicle is jacked up and raised on the lifting platform.
- The time is long enough for the battery to rest for a few minutes.
- Before checking the battery with a battery tester, the voltage at the battery must remain static for a short time.
- The described sequence must be followed to ensure this rest period is observed.

1. Switch off all loads and remove ignition key.
2. Park the vehicle on the lifting platform.
3. Switch off lights, switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
4. Move front left seat back and up as far as possible. Move backrest fully forward.

5. Disengage front trim panel at the rear -arrow A-, then unclip it by pulling it forward -arrow B-

6. Unclip the right and left carpet trim -arrows-.

7. Unscrew the two fastening screws -1-.
8. Fold the seat back as far as possible -arrow A-. With the seat folded, move it forward again using fore/aft adjustment -arrow B-.

9. Open the four tension hooks on the battery box cover using a screwdriver.
10. Unclip wire harness for seat at the battery box.
11. Remove battery box cover with vent duct.

- No loads (e.g. opening doors, switching on light/radio, etc.) may be activated while the vehicle is jacked up and raised on the lifting platform.
- The time is long enough for the battery to rest for a few minutes.

1. Connect battery tester to the vehicle battery.

INFORMATION:
- The description given below is a general description. It is therefore important to follow the directions in the operating instructions for the battery tester used.

Before the battery test:
If the temperature of the battery cannot be estimated, e.g. if the outside temperature and the temperature in the workshop area differ considerably, the temperature of the battery must be measured using a commercially available infrared temperature gun, for example.

For battery measurements in the vehicle:
Measurements using the battery tester must be taken at the battery poles.

2. Battery temperature: The actual battery temperature must be input on the battery tester. If the temperature of the battery cannot be estimated, e.g. if the outside temperature and the temperature in the workshop area differ considerably, the temperature of the battery must be measured using a commercially available infrared temperature gun, for example.
3. Battery type: The type of battery (standard equipment - lead acid) >> type Normal must be selected here.
4. Test procedure: The evaluation method for current battery standard equipment stipulates that the values are determined in accordance with DIN.
5. Battery value: The battery value (low-temperature test current) is read off from the battery, e.g. the value is 340 A for a 12V 70 Ah battery. The value is 380 A for a 12V 80 Ah battery.
6. Start the test:
7. After a short time, the result of the test will be displayed. The functional state and the charge state, for example, will be displayed, depending on the type of tester.
8. The battery testers measure the battery voltage and the low-temperature test current. The measured values are compared and the subsequent procedure is displayed on the tester based on these values.

Subsequent work

1. Replace the battery box cover carefully. The cover must be mounted properly.
2. Attach the four tension hooks on the battery box cover and close using the screwdriver.
3. Clip in wire harness for seat at the battery box.

WARNING:
Incorrect handling of safety bolts
- Danger of injury
- Loss of torque
- Always use new fastening screws and nuts following removal.
- Observe specified tightening torques.
- Carry out a visual inspection of all re-used parts.

4. Move the folded seat towards the rear -arrow A- and then fold it forward -arrow B-.
5. Tighten fastening screws -1-. - Tightening torque: 45 Nm (33 ftlb.)

6. Clip in the right and left carpet trim -arrows- until they engage securely.

7. Clip in the front seat trim at the front seat frame and at the side trim panel -arrow A-.
8. Press the front seat trim down -arrow B- until the locking lugs engage securely on the seat frame.
9. Carry out work instructions after disconnecting the battery.
