Eliminating Symptoms - Engine: Converting Suspension For Rear Exhaust System (Exhaust System Defective)

General information

Symptom
Exhaust system defective or exhaust system cracked/leaking around main silencers.

Causes and remedial action

Cause
The rigid connection between the exhaust system and engine means that engine vibrations are transmitted to the exhaust system. This can cause cracks and damage on the rear silencers.

Remedial action
Limit the clamping force of the clamps by fitting a spacer sleeve.

Tools and materials
997.111.218.30, NEW - Spacer sleeve, 2 required
997.113.119.31 - Restraining strap (clamp), 2 required
997.111.311.30 - Main silencer, cyl. 1 - 3
997.111.312.30 - Main silencer, cyl. 4 - 6

Converting suspension for rear exhaust system
1. Check the exhaust system, particularly the two rear silencers (main silencers) for cracks and damage.
2. Replace damaged parts as described under.
3. Unscrew fastening screws on both clamps -item 1-.
4. Replace the two clamps (restraining straps) - Figure 1 with new clamps.
5. Insert the spacer sleeve (Part No. 997.111.218.30) -item 2- between the two tabs on each clamp.
6. Screw in fastening screws on the two clamps -item 1- again and tighten to the prescribed torque
- Tightening torque: 15 Nm (11 ftlb.).
