Incorrect repair measures in the event of a leak on the PDK transmission

We have discovered that the ATF oil pan on PDK transmissions is being replaced when customers complain of a leak around the ATF oil pan.

The ATF oil pans that were returned to us were examined by the manufacturer and found to be OK.

Action Required:

If customers complain of a leak on the PDK transmission, the cause of the leak must be determined using the following procedure before carrying out any repairs. This procedure applies until further notice.

Affected Vehicles:

All vehicles produced from September 1, 2009.

Tools:

Commercially available leak detecting spray, commercially available brake cleaner, clean cloth

Work Procedure:

To determine the cause of the leak, the following procedure involves cleaning the PDK transmission, test-driving the vehicle and then performing a visual inspection.

1 Check all possible leakage points (cover stoppers, etc.) for traces of leaking oil, see also 373000 PDK --> transmission: Repair measures in the event of various symptoms (35/09)

Are there signs of an oil leak around the ATF oil pan?

If there are: --> Step 2

If not: --> Proceed as described in Technical Information 35/09, 373000 PDK transmission: Repair measures in the event of various symptoms (35/09)

2 Document the nature of the oil leak (source of the leak, oil dripping, drops of oil forming, etc.) for PQIS using digital photos.

3 Clean the transmission:
Carefully clean the gap between the transmission housing and ATF oil pan with brake cleaner and a clean cloth and then blow out the gap with compressed air.

4 Spray the gap and all possible leakage points with leak detecting spray.

5 Perform a test drive until the engine oil and coolant are at least at operating temperature.

Then perform a visual inspection of the transmission and document any possible sources of leaks that you find with digital photos for PQIS.

Are there still signs of an oil leak around the ATF oil pan seal?

If there are: --> Please file a TLAR and you will be informed of what to do next.

If not: --> Proceed as described in Technical Information 35/09, 373000 PDK transmission: Repair measures in the event of various symptoms (35/09)
