Preliminary work

CAUTION

Risk of irreparable damage to electrical and electronic components. Risk of damage to headlights.

-> Before removing headlight, remove ignition key and switch off the light.
-> Headlights must not be covered, e.g. by wing protector or film, when they are switched on. Risk of damage to headlights due to chaffing and excessive temperatures.

Information

- The control unit is located underneath the Bi-Xenon headlight.

- The control unit also has the task of driving the motors for the headlight beam adjustment (HBA) of the Bi-Xenon headlight.

1. Turn the Bi-Xenon headlight over and set it down on a suitable surface.
2. Unscrew the three fastening screws -1- and remove control unit for gas discharge lamp -2- from the Bi-Xenon headlight in -direction of arrow-.

Installing control unit for gas-discharge headlight

Information

Make sure the connector for the control unit for the gas discharge lamp is perfectly straight when fitting it into the Bi-Xenon headlight. Do not use force when inserting the connector.

1. Position control unit for gas-discharge headlight -2- on the Bi-Xenon headlight -3- in -direction of arrow- and secure it with the three fastening screws -2-. => Tightening torque: 3 Nm (2.0 ftlb.)

2. If a new control unit for the gas-discharge headlight was installed, it must be programmed using the PIWIS Tester 9718.

Programming control unit for gas-discharge headlight

Information

During programming, it is essential to guarantee the power supply for the Porsche System Tester. A battery charger with a current rating of at least 40 A must be connected to the vehicle battery.

The Porsche System Tester instructions take precedence and in the event of a discrepancy, these are the instructions that must be followed. Deviations may occur with later software versions.

The procedure described here has been structured generally; different text or additions may appear in the Porsche System Tester.

1. Control unit was replaced.
2. PIWIS Tester 9718 must be connected to the vehicle. Start the PIWIS Tester and switch on ignition.
3. Select vehicle type.
4. Switch to the control units and press >>.
5. Select new control unit for gas-discharge headlight Headlight control unit, left or Headlight control unit, right using the cursor keys and press >>.
6. Switch to the Control unit replacement menu and press >>.
7. The Tester displays the required coding variants. Note them down if necessary and press >>.
8. Enter the VIN or copy it by pressing >>.
9. Confirm the VIN by pressing F7. >>.
10. Select the Chassis variant and press >>.
11. Select the headlight type static cornering light and press >>.
12. Select the headlight type dynamic cornering light and press >>.
13. Select the Country version and press >>.
14. The coding is displayed. If this coding is OK, code it by pressing F8.
15. Observe message Vehicle must be stationary on the Tester. >>.
16. The message Resetting appears on the Tester. Control unit was replaced successfully. >>.
17. Switch ignition off and then on again.
18. If the fault Headlight system fault now appears in the instrument cluster, read out the fault memory in the replaced control unit, e.g. Headlight control unit, left and in the control unit that was not replaced, e.g. Headlight control unit, right. If the fault is 1044 Control unit coded incorrectly or 15586 Control unit software function error , the "new" control unit was programmed using a more recent software version than the "old" control unit. If this is the case, the "old" control unit (which was not replaced) must also be re-programmed using the same procedure as described in Steps 5 to 18 above.
19. Check that the headlights are working correctly by switching on the lights.

Subsequent work
