Loosening and securing lock carrier (service position)

Preliminary work
1. Remove front apron.
2. Detach the front lid seal close to the lock carrier.
3. Remove front engine compartment cover.
4. Disconnect cable for front lid lock.
Tools and materials
Loosening lock carrier
1. Remove the rubber covers.
1.1. Pull rubber cover on the right -1- up and off.
1.2. Pull rubber cover on the left -2- up and off.
WARNING:
Incorrect handling of airbag units
- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur
- Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
- A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
- Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
- Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
- Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
- Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
- Replace damaged parts during removal.
- Always position the airbag unit in such a way that the airbag opening is facing upwards.
- If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be stored in a safe place.
- Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
- Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90° .
- Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
- Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
- Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.
2. Remove side air guide.
Turbo only
2.1. Unclip airbag sensor wire harness -14- .
2.2. Slide the side air guide -15- outwards and remove it.
3. Unscrew fastening screws -5- .
3.1. Unscrew fastening screws on both sides of the vehicle.
4. Screw in service fastening screws -4- .
4.1. Screw in service fastening screws on both sides of the vehicle and tighten by hand.
5. Unscrew fastening screws -5- .
5.1. Unscrew the fastening screws on both sides of the vehicle.
6. Unscrew fastening screws -6 and 7- .
6.1. Unscrew fastening screws on both sides of the vehicle.
7. Loosen the air guide.
7.1. Loosen the air guide at the air cleaner housing -8- .
8. Disconnect electric plug connection.
8.1. Disconnect electric plug connection -9- on the left side of the vehicle. Release the lock and pull off the connector.
9. Detach the charge air cooler.
Turbo only
9.1. Unscrew fastening screws -16- .
9.2. Remove spacers -17- .
10. Detach guide rails on the front apron at the side.
11. Pull lock carrier into service position.
11.1. To prevent damage to accessories, pull the lock carrier forward evenly on both sides.
Securing lock carrier
1. Slide the lock carrier into installation position.
1.1. To prevent damage to accessories, slide the lock carrier back into installation position evenly on both sides.
2. Screw in fastening screws -5- .
2.1. Screw in fastening screws on both sides of the vehicle and tighten slightly.
3. Unscrew service fastening screws -4- .
3.1. Unscrew service fastening screws on both sides of the vehicle.
4. Screw in fastening screws -3- and tighten slightly.
4.1. Screw in fastening screws on both sides of the vehicle and tighten slightly.
4.2. Position the lock carrier according to the existing impressions.
5. Secure the lock carrier in installation position.
5.1. Screw in fastening screws -6 and 7- on both sides of the vehicle and tighten slightly.
6. Adjust the lock carrier.
7. Tighten the fastening screws on the lock carrier.
7.1. Tighten fastening screws -3- , -5- , -6 and 7- to the specified tightening torque.
- Tightening torque: 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)+/-1 Nm (+/-0.5 ftlb.)
- Tightening torque: 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)+/-1 Nm (+/-0.5 ftlb.)
- Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)+/-10 Nm (+/-7.5 ftlb.)
8. Fasten guide rails on the front apron at the side.
9. Connect the air guide.
9.1. Connect the air guide to the air cleaner housing -8- .
10. Attach the charge air cooler.
Turbo only
10.1. Insert spacers -17- .
10.2. Screw in fastening screws -16- and tighten to the specified tightening torque.
- Tightening torque: 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)+/-1 Nm (+/-0.5 ftlb.)
11. Install side air guides.
Turbo only
11.1. Position the side air guide -15- and move it to the centre of the vehicle until it engages.
11.2. Position and clip in air sensor wire harness -14- .
12. Attach the front lid seal close to the lock carrier.
13. Connect electric plug connection -9- .
13.1. Connect the electric plug connection on the left side of the vehicle.
14. Install rubber covers.
14.1. Fit the right rubber cover -1- from above and press in the rubber tabs.
14.2. Fit the left rubber cover -2- from above and press in the rubber tabs.
Disconnecting cable for front lid lock
INFORMATION: On right-hand drive vehicles, the cable for the lid lock is located on the right side of the vehicle.
1. Release the connection piece from the body.
1.1. Unclip the connection piece -10- from the body.
2. Unlock the connection piece.
2.1. Release the locking tabs -11- with a commercially available screwdriver -arrow- .
3. Open the connection piece and disengage the cable.
3.1. Open the cover -12- on the connection piece and disengage the front lid lock cable -13- .
Connecting cable for front lid lock
1. Engage the cable and close the connection piece.
1.1. Engage the cable for the front lid lock -13- and close the lid -12- on the connection piece.
2. Attach the connection piece.
2.1. The locking tabs -11- must audibly engage in place.
3. Secure the connection piece to the vehicle body.
3.1. Clip the connection piece -10- to the body.
Subsequent work
1. Connect cable for front lid lock.
2. Check function of lid lock.
2.1. Engage the locking hook on the lock in the catch using a screwdriver and trip by actuating the lid release in the vehicle.
In the case of a malfunction, check the bottom lock section or lid release cable for damage; replace if necessary.
3. Install the front spoiler.
4. Install front engine cover.
