4X00IN03 Safety Notes and Information When Repairing the Running Gear
WM 4X00IN Safety notes and information when repairing the running gear
General warning notes
Tools
Fitting vehicle parts
WARNING
Incorrect handling of safety bolts
- Danger of injury
- Loss of torque
-> Always use new fastening screws and nuts following removal.
-> Observe specified tightening torques.
-> Carry out a visual inspection of all re-used parts.
Spring struts/coil springs
WARNING
Installation of incorrect or damaged coil springs
- Different vehicle handling
- Coil springs can break
-> Examine the components carefully before installation.
-> When installing new coil springs/spring struts, make sure they are assigned correctly.
-> Only use a suitable tool for removing and installing coil springs.
-> Do not weld or grind, or use a hammer close to the spring struts.
-> Do not apply colour markings to the coil springs.
Wheels and tyres
WARNING
High tyre seating pressure
- Risk of squashing or bruising
-> Use a tyre filling cage.
Information
- Newly mounted tyres require a bedding-in period to remove the vulcanisation layer.
- Customers must be informed that the full performance of new tyres is achieved only after a distance of 100 to 200 km (60 to 120 miles) has been driven. Avoid extreme driving manoeuvres (acceleration, braking) during this time.
Working on vehicles with PSM
WARNING
Steering-angle sensor not calibrated or calibrated incorrectly
- Unexpected vehicle handling
- Steering-angle sensor does not function
- Malfunction in steering-angle sensor
-> After working on wheel suspension parts, when replacing the steering-angle sensor and after changing the wheel alignment values, calibrate the steering-angle sensor using PIWIS Tester II 9818.
-> Keep the front wheels in straight-ahead position on the measuring platform during calibration.
-> On vehicles with electromechanical steering, also re-teach the electric steering lock settings.
Brake system
WARNING
Installation of brake pads with the wrong brake pad quality
- Longer braking distance
- More wear on brake pads
-> Only use the type-specific brake pads listed in the Porsche Parts Catalogue.
-> Replace the brake pads when the brake pad wear indicator light comes on, but no later than when there is a residual pad thickness of 2 mm on each axle.
-> Replace the brake discs on each axle as soon as the brake pad wear limit is reached.
Information
- Observe brake fluid quality. Use only new DOT 4 brake fluid.
- The brake-fluid change interval using Super DOT4 brake fluid is two years.
- This brake fluid is available under the following part numbers: Container quantity: 1 litre = 000.043.203.66. 30 litres = 000.043.203.67.
Handling airbag systems
WARNING
Incorrect handling of airbag units
- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur
-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key or remote control (hand-held transmitter).
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only detach connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position airbag units so that the blow-out opening is facing upwards, e.g. crest on driver's airbag.
-> Do not position anything on the airbag units.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag units must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.
Steering
WARNING
Risk of accidents accompanied by danger of injury and damage to the vehicle due to incorrect handling of Pentosin CHF 202.
- It is possible that the reservoir can overflow while driving if too much Pentosin CHF 202 is added. Overflowing onto hot components can cause fires.
- If coolant hoses come into contact with Pentosin CHF 202 for a longer period of time, they will swell.
-> Observe the MAXIMUM marking.
-> Multiple steering operations (manoeuvring) with the engine switched off change the fluid level in the reservoir. The engine must be run for approx. 20 seconds immediately prior to the fluid level check.
-> If coolant hoses come into contact with Pentosin CHF 202, thoroughly clean them with water IMMEDIATELY and replace them if necessary.
Information
- Rack-and-pinion steering gear and servo pump must not be repaired or dismantled.
