Engine Oil: Service and Repair
WM 170117 Changing engine oil and oil filter on DFI engines
Technical values
Preliminary work
1. Jack up the vehicle at the points provided.
2. Remove engine underbody panel. => 108019 Removing and installing engine guard (underbody panel) on DFI engines - section on "Removing"
Information
Component overview
Oil/water heat exchanger, oil filter
Oil pan, oil drain plug
Draining and filling in engine oil
WARNING
Danger of scalding from hot oil.
- When changing engine oil, the oil must be drained while hot so that all dirt particles and suspended matter are cleaned out. The engine oil must not be drained by suction.
- When changing engine oil, the oil must be drained while hot because hot oil is more fluid than cold oil.
-> Wear personal protective gear (goggles, gloves).
-> Position collecting container as close as possible to the drain opening on the oil pan so that no hot oil sprays out at the side.
-> Have sufficient cleaning cloths ready.
Information
- Engine oil should not be removed by suction as particles of dirt may remain in the oil pan.
1. Remove oil drain plug -arrow- and collect the engine oil in a collecting container (allow to drain for approx. 5 minutes). Dispose of waste oil in accordance with legal requirements.
Oil drain plug
2. Replace sealing ring on oil drain plug and fit oil drain plug. => Tightening torque: 50 Nm (37 ftlb.)
3. Fill in engine oil of the stipulated viscosity and quality. Oil filling capacity without oil filter => Filling capacity: 8.5 litres ; oil filling capacity with oil filter => Filling capacity: 9.0 litres

WARNING
Hot fluid
- Danger of scalding
-> Avoid contact with hot fluid.
-> Wear personal protective gear.
Information
- Do not remove the sealing ring with a sharp object.
- The oil filter cover contains a cut-out through which the O-ring can be removed.
- Position collecting container as close as possible to the oil filter so that no hot oil sprays out at the side.
- Have sufficient cleaning cloths ready.
- Cover chassis hoses with cleaning cloths.
1. On vehicles with PDCC, loosen the hoses on the oil guide housing.
1.1. Remove two nuts. -arrows-
PDCC lines
1.2. Unclip line under air conditioning compressor -arrow-. Lift the lines aside.

2. Loosen the oil filter cover with a suitable hexagon socket or ring wrench and remove it. => Loosening oil filter
Loosening oil filter
3. Slowly open the oil filter cover. Drain the remaining oil into a collecting container. Lift the PDCC lines aside while doing this.
4. Remove the filter element. Dispose of the filter in accordance with legal requirements.
5. Clean the oil filter cover thoroughly inside and outside and replace the sealing ring. Carefully lever off the sealing ring => Cleaning oil filter cover and replacing sealing ring. Do not damage the oil filter cover while doing so.
Cleaning oil filter cover and replacing sealing ring
6. First fit the filter element into the oil guide housing.
7. Lightly oil the sealing ring for the oil filter cover with engine oil. Screw in the oil filter cover and tighten hand-tight using a suitable ring wrench. Final tightening => Tightening torque: 25 Nm (19 ftlb.)
8. Check and fill in engine oil. The oil filling capacity after removing the oil filter is => Filling capacity: 0.5 litres.
Subsequent work
1. Fit underbody panelling.
Information
After changing the oil or checking the engine-oil level (e.g. during the sales check), the oil level must be topped up to the MAX marking when the oil is still warm.
2. Start the engine and check the oil level. See below.
Checking engine-oil level (markings on oil dipstick)
- The vehicle must be horizontal.
- The engine must be switched off and at operating temperature.
- Before measuring, allow engine oil to flow back into the oil pan for approximately 3 minutes.
The oil level on the oil dipstick must never be below the MIN marking or above the MAX marking.
Information
- After changing the oil, the oil level must be checked on the dipstick.
- The engine must have reached its operating temperature.
1. Pull out oil dipstick and wipe it off with a clean, lint-free cloth. Push dipstick back in fully, pull it out again and read off the oil level. => Oil dipstick min/max Correct the engine-oil level if necessary.
Oil dipstick min/max
- MAX marking
- MIN marking
- Area from MIN up to MAX marking: no more oil must be added. If the oil level is just before the MIN marking, top up engine oil as far as the MAX marking.
- Area below MIN marking: refill engine oil up to MAX marking.
- If the oil level is 5 mm over the MAX marking, drain some oil until the level corresponds to the MAX marking.
- Refilling capacity between MIN and MAX markings is 1.5 litres.
