Engine - Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair
WM 197819 Removing and installing coolant temperature sensor on 4.8-litre DFI engines
Tools
Technical values
Preliminary work
1. Remove centre engine compartment cover at the rear. -> 700219 Removing and installing front trim (engine compartment) - section on "Removing" Service and Repair
2. Remove the intake-air distributor. -> 244619 Removing and installing intake-air distributor on DFI engines - section on "Removing" Overhaul
Removing coolant temperature sensor
CAUTION
Danger of poisoning.
- Coolant additives and cleaning liquids are toxic.
-> Swallowing coolant additives and cleaning liquids must be urgently avoided.
-> Do not consume any food or drink while working (danger of accidental mixing).
-> If swallowed, observe the warning information on the containers and contact a doctor. If necessary, show the doctor the warning information on the packaging.
CAUTION
Danger of scalding with hot coolant.
-> Never open the cooling system when it is hot. Emerging coolant may be very hot and can cause scalding.
-> The cooling system must be depressurised before being opened.
-> Allow engine to cool down.
The coolant temperature sensor is installed in the coolant guide behind the engine wire harness. -2-
Coolant guide
1. Pull off the cable plug for the temperature sensor -37- between the bulkhead and the engine wire harness duct. To do this, carefully pull the cable duct forward and release and pull off the cable plug with a hook assembly tool T10118.
Wire harness assignment
2. Unscrew the coolant temperature sensor using a suitable socket. Close off the threaded bore so that only a small amount of coolant leaks out.
Installing coolant temperature sensor
1. Fit and screw in the coolant temperature sensor. => Tightening torque: 30 Nm (22 ftlb.)

Subsequent work
1. Install intake-air distributor. -> 244619 Removing and installing intake-air distributor on DFI engines - section on "Installing" Overhaul
2. Fit centre engine compartment cover at the rear. -> 700219 Removing and installing front trim (engine compartment) - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
3. Check the engine coolant level and top it up if necessary.
