Air Bag Systems: Description and Operation

Passive Safety







The Porsche Panamera features a comprehensive safety concept that provides reliable and secure protection for occupants in the event of accidents. It includes the following equipment:
- Two-stage, full-size airbags for driver and passenger
- Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP)
- Side impact protection in each door
- Side airbags in the rear
- Knee airbags for restraining the lower body in the event of a frontal impact
- Curtain airbags across the entire roof frame and side windows from the A to the C pillar
- Twin-chamber thorax/pelvic side airbags for driver and passenger

Driver and passenger are protected by full-size airbags which are deployed in two stages depending on the severity and type of accident (e.g. head-on or diagonally from the front). Two sensors at the front of the vehicle, together with the sensor technology in the airbag control unit, detect a crash and evaluate it significantly more accurately and at a much earlier stage. In less severe accidents, the occupants are restrained by the first stage. The airbag is softer in this stage, reducing the load on the occupants.

The knee airbags are standard equipment and are located in the lower section of the dashboard. The addition of these, ensure that the driver's and passenger's lower body are restrained in the event of a frontal impact in accordance with the severity of the accident.

The Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP), available as standard equipment, includes seat-mounted twin-chamber thorax/pelvic side airbags at the front, adapted to the pelvic and rib area for the driver and passenger, curtain airbags across the entire roof frame and side windows from the A to the C pillar, side impact protection in each door protection in each door and side airbags in the rear.
