Group 20 - Fuel supply, control

WARNING

Toxic substances

- Danger of poisoning or suffocation

-> Ventilate the work area well.
-> Never ingest or inhale.
-> Read specific information on the Hazard Sheet.
-> Wear personal protective gear.

WARNING

Highly inflammable or explosive materials

- Danger of fire or explosion

-> Avoid contact with hot parts or sources of ignition.
-> Use suction to remove ignitable vapours.
-> Attach warning sign in a clearly visible position.

Information

- Absorb any escaping fuel using a suitable binding material or a cloth.

- Cloths which have absorbed fuel must be disposed of according to the applicable national laws.

- The fuel system must be depressurised before starting work on it.

- Only work on the fuel system in well-ventilated rooms.

- Any seals which have been removed must always be replaced.

- Do not use any sealant containing silicone or silicone spray when the injection system is open. Traces of silicone drawn in by the engine are not combusted and damage the oxygen sensors.

- The number of plug connections can vary, depending on equipment.

2. Drain the fuel tank fully (both sides). -> 2010EN Draining and filling the fuel tank (draining and filling in fuel) - section on "Draining" Procedures

NOTICE

Incorrect handling of fuel tank

- Danger of cracking or damaging the fuel tank if handling instructions are not observed.

-> Drain the fuel tank fully before lowering it.

3. Remove restraining straps at the middle, left and right of the fuel tank and lower the fuel tank. Leave the fuel tank on the vehicle! -> 201019 Removing and installing fuel tank - section on "Removing" Removal and Replacement
4. Unclip fuel line -1- and fuel vent line -2- on the underbody at the right of the fuel tank.

5. Remove left floor covering.

7. Remove C-pillar trim panel with sound absorber on driver's side.

10. Remove transmitter (trigger) for tyre pressure monitoring system (TPM) at the left.

11. Remove air vent under driver's seat.

NOTICE

Incorrect handling of main wire harness

- Risk of damage to lines

-> The main wire harness contains all airbag lines, antenna lines and optical waveguides.
-> The main wire harness must not be separated and is always replaced as a complete wire harness when carrying out extensive repairs.
-> If individual lines are damaged, shut off these lines and install new lines. Lay the new lines along the main wire harness and secure them to the main wire harness.

1. Release and pull off electric plug connection for seat heating for side cushion at the left. -> 724919 Removing and installing side cushion - section on "Removing" 724919 Removing and installing side cushion
2. Remove cable cover at the left wheel housing.

2.1. Unscrew fastening nut -1-.
2.2. Unclip fixing clip -2-.
2.3. Lift up cable cover -4-. -arrow A-
2.4. Pull cable cover -4- out of the locking mechanism -3- ( -arrow B- ).
2.5. Loosen main wire harness.
3. Loosen rubber sleeve and release and disconnect electric plug connection for TPM transmitter (trigger) at the left. -> 443619 Removing and installing TPM transmitter (trigger) - section on "Removing" 443619 Installing and removing TPM transmitter (trigger)
4. Unclip and remove supply line to TPM transmitter (trigger).
5. Release and pull off electric plug connection for rear left airbag sensor. -> 695119 Removing and installing airbag sensor - section on "Removing" 695119 Removing and Installing Airbag Sensor
6. Remove cable cover on rear inner sill.

6.1. Unscrew fastening screws -1- on cable cover.
6.2. Remove cable cover
7. Unclip main wire harness.
8. Loosen rubber sleeve and release and disconnect electric plug connection for fuel level sensor. -> 201519 Removing and installing fuel level sensor - section on "Removing"
9. Remove electric plug connection for door electrics.

9.1. Open rear left door of the vehicle and detach rubber protection on wiring arrangement for door electrics from the B-pillar.
9.2. Release mounting housing -1- ( -arrow A- ) and remove it from the B-pillar.
9.3. Release electric plug connection for door electrics -arrow B- and disconnect it -arrow C-.
9.4. Remove supply line for door electrics from the B-pillar.
10. Release and disconnect electric plug connection for air vent lighting at the B-pillar on the left. -> 856019 Air vent at B-pillar - section on "Removing and installing" 856019 Air vent at B-pillar
11. Release and disconnect electric plug connection for left seat-belt pretensioner. -> 691119 Removing and installing front three-point belt - section on "Removing" 691119 Removing and installing front three-point belt
12. Release and disconnect electric plug connection for PDC control unit. -> 917419 Removing and installing control unit for ParkAssist - section on "Removing"
13. Release electric plug connection for left seat connection -1- ( -arrow A- ) and remove it from the bracket -arrow B-.

14. Loosen fastening nut for ground point -2- under the driver's seat and remove supply line -arrow C-.
15. Unclip supply line for air-conditioning system sensor and servo motors for the rear footwell and release and disconnect electric plug connection -> 887519 Removing and installing air vent - section on "Removing" 887519 Removing and installing air vent.
16. Release cable duct on driver's seat.

16.1. Unscrew fastening nut -1- on driver's seat.
16.2. Release cable duct from the fixing clip by pulling it -arrow-.
17. Unclip and disconnect main wire harness at the front inner sill.

18. Loosen fastening nut -1- for ground point at the A-pillar and remove supply line -arrow A-.

19. Release and disconnect electric plug connection for centre airbag sensor. -> 695119 Removing and installing airbag sensor - section on "Removing" 695119 Removing and Installing Airbag Sensor
20. Release cable duct at the A-pillar.

20.1. Unscrew fastening nut -1- for cable duct.
20.2. Release cable duct -2- from the fixing clip by pulling it -arrow-.

Securing main wire harness in passenger compartment at the left

1. Installation is performed in reverse order.
2. First lay the main wire harness loosely in the passenger compartment at the left, ensuring that it is positioned correctly.
3. Secure cable ducts.
4. Secure main wire harness in passenger compartment at the left as well as lines coming from it.
5. Plug in control units and electric plug connections until they engage securely.
6. Connect ground points.
7. Secure sound absorbers and trim panels.

Subsequent work

1. Install control unit for ParkAssist. -> 917419 Removing and installing control unit for ParkAssist - section on "Installing"
2. Install left air vent.

3. Install transmitter (trigger) at the left.

4. Install A-pillar trim panel on driver's side. -> 705719 Removing and installing A-pillar trim panel - section on "Installing" 705719 Removing and installing A-pillar trim
5. Install lower part of B-pillar trim panel on driver's side. -> 70671903 Removing and installing lower part of B-pillar trim panel - section on "Installing" 70671903 Removing and installing lower part of B-pillar trim panel
6. Install left C-pillar trim panel.

7. Install side cushion at the left. -> 724919 Removing and installing side cushion - section on "Installing" 724919 Removing and installing side cushion
8. Install floor covering.
-> 704119 Removing and installing floor covering
9. Lift up the fuel tank and fit restraining straps at the middle, left and right. -> 201019 Removing and installing fuel tank - section on "Installing" Removal and Replacement
10. Screw in fastening screw -1- for tank filler neck -2- at the body.

11. Clip in fuel line -1- and fuel vent line -2- on the underbody at the right of the fuel tank -arrow-.
