Preliminary work for airbag triggering unit

WARNING

Incorrect handling of airbag units

- Triggering of airbag unit
- System faults can occur

-> Switch off ignition and remove ignition key.
-> A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.
-> Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.
-> Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
-> Only pull off connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.
-> Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.
-> Replace damaged parts during removal.
-> Always position the airbag unit in such a way that the airbag opening is facing upwards.
-> If removed for an extended period, the airbag unit must be stored in a safe place.
-> Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.
-> Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.
-> Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.
-> Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.
-> Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

1. If the airbag triggering unit has to be replaced, the values/coding must be read out prior to removal using the 2nd generation PIWIS Tester 9818. -> 695355 Replacing triggering unit for airbag 695355 Replacing triggering unit.
2. Switch off ignition and remove the remote control from the ignition lock.
3. Disconnect the battery. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery.
4. Remove centre console. -> 681719 Removing and installing centre console - section on "Removing" 681719 Removing and installing centre console.

Installation position

1. Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.
2. Disconnect electric plug connection.
2.1. Release electric plug connection -arrow-.
2.2. Release the locking clip -a-.
2.3. Open the locking clip -b- and remove the plug connection.

3. Screw off the three fastening nuts -1- on the airbag triggering unit and remove the airbag triggering unit.

Installing triggering unit for airbag

Information

If a new component (e.g. sensor, airbag control unit, airbag unit) of the airbag system has to be installed, the new component will be supplied with a barcode sticker (tear-off label).

- Tear off the tear-off label -2- on the new component -1- and stick it under the heading Proof of airbag system check/component replacement in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet.

- The replacement date and mileage must be documented and the booklet must be stamped with the dealer's stamp.

1. Position airbag triggering unit on the centre tunnel and secure with the three fastening nuts -1-. => Tightening torque: 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)+10 %-15 %

2. Connect electric plug connection.
2.1. Connect electric connector -arrow-.
2.2. Lock locking bar on the connector as far as it will go -b-.
2.3. Close the lock on the connector -a-.

Subsequent work for airbag triggering unit

1. Install centre console. -> 681719 Removing and installing centre console - section on "Installing" 681719 Removing and installing centre console.
2. Connect the battery and carry out instructions after connecting the battery. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery.
3. If the airbag triggering unit was replaced, the values/coding must be written back into the control unit again. -> 695355 Replacing triggering unit for airbag 695355 Replacing triggering unit.
