Removing And Installing Primary Catalytic Converter (Turbo)

Technical values







Preliminary work

1. Move front lid to service position.
2. Remove front wheels.
3. Remove front underbody panelling
4. Remove supporting plate

CAUTION:
- Hot components
- Risk of burns
- Let hot components cool down.
- Wear personal protective gear.


CAUTION:
- Heavy components
- Risk of squashing
- Wear personal protective gear.
- Get someone to help if necessary.








1. Detach engine wire harness from the bulkhead on the right side. For details, see partial work in scope.
1.1. Detach cowl panel cover on the right side.
1.2. Lift engine wire harness out of the bulkhead on the right side.







2. Remove electric plug-in connectors -1- from the oxygen sensors.







3. Check that the cables are routed correctly -> Cable routing.
4. Unclip cable on the right cylinder bank.
5. Raise the vehicle.
6. Unclip cable at the transmission housing.
7. Pull oxygen sensor cables downwards.
7.1. Fasten the cables to a suitable cord so that you can pull them up again during installation.
7.2. Pull the cables down past the vacuum pump.







8. Loosen clamping sleeves -1- for the exhaust pipe.
8.1. Loosen clamping screws -2-.
8.2. Slide clamping sleeves towards the rear -arrow-.







9. Screw off fastening nut -1- on the bottom holder -2-.







10. Unscrew fastening screw -1- on top holder -2-.

INFORMATION:
- Access to the fastening nuts between the heat shield on the all-wheel drive at the front and the turbocharger is very tight.
- Use a narrow tool (sockets, extensions). Use jointed sockets if necessary.

11. Screw off fastening nuts on studs -3-.
12. Remove primary catalytic converter.

1. Remove electric plug-in connectors -1- from the oxygen sensors.







2. Check that the cables are routed correctly -> Oxygen sensor cable routing.
3. Unclip cable on the left cylinder bank.
4. Raise the vehicle







5. Remove heat shield -1- at the universal joint on the steering column.
5.1. Unscrew fastening screws -2-.
5.2. Remove heat shield -1-.







6. On vehicles with Servotronic: Pull off connector -3-.
7. Remove universal joint -1-.
7.1. Loosen clamping screw -2-.
7.2. Slide universal joint -1- and lower part of steering column upwards -arrow-.

8. Unclip cable at the transmission housing.
9. Pull oxygen sensor cables downwards.
9.1. Fasten the cables to a suitable cord so that you can pull them up again during installation.
9.2. Pull the cables down past the high-pressure pump.







10. Loosen clamping sleeves -1- for the exhaust pipe.
10.1. Loosen clamping screws -2-.
10.2. Slide clamping sleeves towards the rear -arrow-.







11. Screw off fastening nut -1- on the bottom holder -2-.







12. Unscrew fastening screw -1- on top holder -2-.
13. Screw off fastening nuts on studs -3-.
14. Remove primary catalytic converter.

INFORMATION:
- The primary catalytic converters are installed in reverse order to removal.
- The fastening nuts on the studs for the manifold must be tightened crosswise.

1. Replace fastening nuts between the primary catalytic converters and exhaust manifolds and replace seals.
2. Use new clamping sleeves and move them into installation position at the same time.
3. Tighten all fastening screws and nuts to -> Tightening torque: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.).

INFORMATION:
- The primary catalytic converters are installed in reverse order to removal.

Subsequent work

1. Install supporting plate
2. Install front underbody panelling.
3. Fit the front wheels
