Radiator Cooling Fan: Service and Repair

Preliminary work

Preliminary work for removing electric fan

1. Remove front left or right wheel. -> 440519 Removing and installing wheel - section on "Removing" 440519 Removing and installing wheel
2. Remove front left or right wheel housing liner. -> 505619 Removing and installing front wheel housing liner - section on "Removing" Service and Repair
3. Remove front apron. -> 631519 Removing and installing front apron - section on "Removing"

Removing electric fan (with frame)

Information

Specifications for wrench sizes (a/f specifications) for screw heads are described as follows:

- Torx screws: (E.) for external Torx, (T.) for internal Torx.

- Hexagon-head bolts (internal and external hexagon): Wrench size (a/f)

1. Remove holding strut -1- by unscrewing the M6 nuts (a/f 10) -2-.

2. Release and pull off plug connection -1- for electric fan.

3. Remove sheetmetal clips -3- and washers used to secure the radiator to the bracket.
3.1. Remove hexagon-head bolt (a/f 10, M6 x 16) -1- on the hose holder.

4. Unscrew screw (a/f 10, M6 x 20) -1- on the control unit holder -2-.
4.1. Remove control unit holder from the bracket.
The control unit holder is located on the radiator bracket at the right in direction of travel.

5. Unclip vent line -1- at the holder for the bracket -2- in the wheel housing.

6. Unscrew hexagon-head bolt (a/f 13, M8 x 12) -1- used to secure the bracket -2-.





Bottom bracket

7. Unscrew M8 nuts (a/f 13) -2-.
7.1. Carefully pull the bracket downwards and pull the hose holder from the guide.

8. Remove the bracket by pulling it downwards.
9. Unscrew the tapping screws (T 25) -1- used to secure the frame at the outside.
9.1. Bend electric fan with frame from the outside in and pull it out of the guides -2-.

10. Remove electric fan from frame.
10.1. Disconnect electric line from the frame. Remove tie-wrap.
10.2. Loosen and unscrew three M6 hexagon nuts (a/f 10) -1-. Remove electric fan.

Installing electric fan (with frame)

1. Install electric fan in frame.
1.1. Position electric fan in frame. Screw in and tighten three M6 hexagon nuts (a/f 10) -1-.
=> Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
1.2. Secure electric line to the frame with a tie-wrap.

2. Slide electric fan with frame into the guides -2-.
2.1. Bend electric fan with frame from the inside out.
2.2. Screw in and tighten tapping screws (T 25) -1-.





Cooling fan

3. Install bracket from below.
3.1. Fit hose holder into the guide and screw in and tighten the screw (a/f 10, M6 x 16) -1-.
=> Tightening torque: 13 Nm (9.5 ftlb.)
3.2. Screw in and tighten nuts (a/f 13, M8 x 12) -2-.
=> Tightening torque: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.)
3.3. Fit and secure washers and sheetmetal clips -3-.

4. Secure bracket -2- at the bottom.
4.1. Screw in and tighten screw (a/f 13, M8 x 12) -1-.
=> Tightening torque: 23 Nm (17 ftlb.)





Bottom bracket

5. Clip in vent line -1- at the holder for the bracket -2- in the wheel housing.

6. Connect plug connection -1- for electric fan.

7. Fit holding strut -1- and tighten M6 nuts (a/f 10) -2-.
=> Tightening torque: 13 Nm (9.5 ftlb.)

Subsequent work for installing electric fan

1. Install front apron.-> 631519 Removing and installing front apron - section on "Installing"
2. Install wheel housing liner at the left and right. -> 505619 Removing and installing front wheel housing liner - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
3. Fit front right and left wheel. -> 440519 Removing and installing wheel - section on "Installing" 440519 Removing and installing wheel
