216420 Removing And Installing Exhaust Temperature Sensors

WM 216420 Removing and installing exhaust temperature sensors

Tools

Technical values

Preliminary work

1. Remove air cleaner housing. => 242519 Removing and installing air cleaner housing.
2. Remove tailpipe covers.
=> 263519 Removing and installing tailpipe cover - Turbo.

WARNING

Objects or loads falling down

- Risk of squashing or crushing

-> Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

Information

- When lowering, the engine must not rest on the rear axle cross member.

Information

- It may only be supported over a large area at the oil pan.

- Localised loading is not permitted.

3. Lower the engine.
3.1. Support the engine at the oil pan with a transmission jack.
Transmission and unit jack Junior Jack 2.0 WE 1223 ; GA passenger car transmission plate WE 1224
3.2. Loosen two M12 collar nuts (T55) on the rear engine mountings.
3.3. Slowly lower the engine using the transmission jack.

Removing exhaust temperature sensor

CAUTION

Hot components

- Risk of burns

-> Let hot components cool down.
-> Wear personal protective gear.

Information

- Both sensors must be removed when carrying out repairs since the electric lines are combined together in one control unit and cannot be separated.

Information

Specifications for wrench sizes (a/f specifications) for screw heads are described as follows:

- Torx screws: (E.) for external Torx, (T.) for internal Torx.

- Hexagon-head bolts (internal and external hexagon): Wrench size (a/f)

1. Remove control unit -1- in the engine compartment at the left.
1.1. Expose electric line for exhaust temperature sensor 1-3 -2- at the top.

Exhaust temperature sensor connectors and line

2. Expose electric line for exhaust temperature sensor 4-6 at the top.
2.1. Unclip line at the engine carrier -arrows-.

Engine carrier spacer sleeves and exhaust temperature sensor line

2.2. Unclip line at the bottom of the engine.

Line routing for exhaust temperature sensor 4-6 at bottom of engine

3. Loosen union nuts for the exhaust temperature sensors and pull these out of the turbocharger.
3.1. Cylinder bank 1-3:

Exhaust temperature sensor, bank 1-3

3.2. Cylinder bank 4-6: Screw off union nut (M12 x 1, a/f 14) -3- and unclip the line at the holder -1-.

Oil return line from oil tank to turbocharger

4. Expose electric line for exhaust temperature sensor 1-3 at the engine.
The retaining clips can be reached easily through the tailpipe opening in the rear apron once the engine is lowered.
4.1. Unclip line at the heat shield and at the holder.

Exhaust temperature sensor line, cylinder bank 1-3

5. Guide exhaust temperature sensors with lines and connectors (control unit) out of the engine compartment.

Installing exhaust temperature sensors

Information

- The thread of the exhaust temperature sensor can be screwed in again a maximum of five times.

- Use the Porsche high-temperature grease (part number 000.043.207.07) to grease the thread.

1. Guide the exhaust temperature sensors and lines past the engine at the left and right.

NOTICE

Exhaust emissions temperature sensor fitted incorrectly

- Risk of damage to components

-> Only use prescribed lubricant when installing the sensor.
-> Carefully check the thread for damage and smear the surface with Optimol MF Paste (Part No. 000.043.207.07).

2. Fit exhaust temperature sensors at the turbochargers.
2.1. Lightly smear the thread with the prescribed grease.
2.2. Fit M12 union nuts (a/f 14) by hand and tighten.
=> Tightening torque: 35 Nm (26 ftlb.)+/-3 Nm (+/-2 ftlb.)
3. Route electric lines for the exhaust temperature sensors and clip them onto the holders (see description for removal).
4. Connect control unit in the engine compartment at the left at the slot for the oxygen sensors.

1. Secure the engine.
1.1. Move the engine into installation position using the transmission jack by guiding the studs on the engine mountings through the engine carrier bushes.
1.2. Fit and tighten two M12 collar nuts (internal Torx T55) on the rear engine mountings.
=> Tightening torque: 85 Nm (63 ftlb.)
1.3. Slowly lower the transmission jack.
2. Fit tailpipe covers.
