Spring strut/wheel carrier assembly

8. Remove brake disc and brake cover plate.
9. Unscrew lock nut from trailing arm (ball joint) using the socket-wrench insert with pivoting extension.

Loosening trailing arm

10. Press out trailing arm (ball joint) using press-out tool 9729 ( -D- three-part press-out tool), as described below.
A shorter push rod -1- is also required for the 911 GT2 (997) and the 911 GT3 as of model year 2010.
This shorter push rod 9729/4 is used instead of the push rod that comes with press-out tool 9729.

Pressing out trailing arm

10.1. Screw push rod -1- onto the thread of the axle joint. Use the shorter push rod 9729/4 for the 911 GT2 (997) and the 911 GT3 as of model year 2010.
10.2. Insert pressure piece -2-.
10.3. Fix pressure piece -2- with centering piece -3-.
10.4. Turn in an anti-clockwise direction at the hexagon of the push rod -1- and press out the trailing arm (ball joint).

Installing wheel bearing housing

Information

If the wheel bearing housing is to be replaced, disassemble the old wheel bearing housing and remove the reusable parts (speed sensor, lid for wheel bearing with fastening screws, wheel hub and tension bolt). -> 405719 Removing and installing front wheel bearing - section on "Removing" 405719 Removing and installing front wheel bearing.

The wheel bearing cannot be reused.

Press new wheel bearing into new (heated) wheel bearing housing and complete the wheel bearing housing -> 405719 Removing and installing front wheel bearing - section on "Installing" 405719 Removing and installing front wheel bearing.

- Before installing, do a visual check on the parts.
- Use new lock nuts and brake caliper fastening screws.
- Observe correct tightening torques -> 4001TW Tightening torques for front axle.
- Tie-rod end taper must be free of grease.
- Counter with a screwdriver 9546 when tightening the lock nut on the toe control arm.

1. Fit trailing arm (ball joint) on wheel carrier (wheel bearing housing). Tighten new lock nut for trailing arm (ball joint) to 75 Nm (56 ftlb.) using the socket-wrench insert and pivoting extension.

Fitting trailing arm

2. Insert spring strut as far as it will go into the wheel carrier. Tighten the new lock nuts (for screw and suspension/stabiliser) -arrows- to the prescribed tightening torque -> 4001TW Tightening torques for front axle.
Install brake disc and brake cover plate.

Spring strut/wheel carrier/trailing arm assembly

3. Place the spring-strut/wheel-carrier assembly into the vehicle. Get another person to help you with this.
- Note the installation position of the spring-strut supporting mount.
- -A- = vehicle outer side/ -B- = vehicle inner side.
- The damper piston rod is thereby shifted outwards.
- The three unused bores in the spring-strut supporting mount are intended only for driving on racing circuits. The three fastening bolts (M8) are fitted in these holes in this case. This increases negative camber.

Spring-strut supporting mount

4. Align spring-strut supporting mount according to the relevant marking (position of the three collar nuts). Tighten the new lock nuts -arrows- to the specified torque at this position.

Spring-strut supporting mount on body

5. Fit the trailing arm fastening screw -4-. Tighten in vehicle position only! Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on the wheels or wheel suspension is raised to the relevant height with a universal lift.
Fit tie-rod end on wheel carrier -2- , diagonal arm on trailing arm (at correct position) -3- and then fit control arm spoiler -1-.

Trailing arm

Observe installation position of control arm mount on the diagonal arm -3-. The diagonal arm must be fitted on the centre bore of the trailing arm (observe the following diagrams).

6. Fit the following accessories at the wheel carrier/spring strut:
Fit the brake caliper -2-. Use new fastening screws.
Fit holder for brake line/brake hose -1- at the wheel carrier.
Fit clip -4- at the spring strut.
Clip in brake pad wear indicator wire and cable on spring strut for PASM (damper adjustment) at the holder -3-.
Fit holder at the wheel carrier -5-.
Fit connecting link (suspension/stabiliser) at the correct position on the anti-roll bar -6-. Counter with a Torx T30 while tightening.

Fitting accessories

Front anti-roll bar position: 911 GT3/911 GT3 RS (997) = position -2- (status as at July 2007). If the position of the anti-roll bar is to be changed, this is described in the main information entitled Adjustment values for suspension alignment, under Anti-roll bar setting (updated).

The standard setting must not be changed for use on public roads!

Changes to the setting - to match personal driving style - are permissible only for the racing circuit!

7. Fit combination plug connection at the wheel carrier.
Connect electric connectors for speed sensor and brake pad wear indicator and lock connectors using a safety clip.
Connect electric connector for damper adjustment (PASM) and clip in at the holder.
8. Install heat shield (curved) for brake disc (above the tie-rod end).

Subsequent work

1. Fit wheel -> 440519 Removing and installing wheel.
2. If the wheel bearing or the wheel bearing housing has been replaced, tighten the central nut at the wheel carrier at the side of the wheel to 460 Nm (340 ftlb.). Actuate the brake while doing this.
3. Check all wheel alignment values and set any values that are outside of the tolerance range -> 449503 Suspension alignment complete.
If assembly work was performed or parts replaced that affect the vehicle height, a complete suspension alignment is necessary (check vehicle height/wheel loads and wheel alignment values and set any values that are outside of the tolerance range).
Then install cover over spring-strut supporting mount.
Once the assembly work has been completed and the wheel alignment values have been set (if necessary), check all wheels for clearance.
4. Fit front underbody panel -> 519219 Removing and installing front cover.
