WM 137819 Removing and installing drive belt - Turbo

Technical values

Preliminary work

1. Remove pressure pipe.
=> 214119 Removing and installing pressure pipe.
2. Remove air cleaner housing.
=> 242519 Removing and installing air cleaner housing - Turbo.

Removing drive belt

WARNING

Do not remove the drive belt when it is warm!

- Risk of damage or deformation!

-> Only remove the drive belt when it is cold.

Information

Specifications for wrench sizes (a/f specifications) for screw heads are described as follows:

- Torx screws: (E.) for external Torx, (T.) for internal Torx.

- Hexagon-head bolts (internal and external hexagon): Wrench size (a/f)

Belt drive routing:

Information

- Mark running direction of drive belt with a coloured pen.

- Even minor damage means that the drive belt must be replaced (even if the maintenance interval has not expired).

- If the drive belt has to be replaced (change interval), it can be cut to facilitate removal.

1. Mark the running direction of the drive belt (with a paint marker, for example) if you intend to reuse it.
2. To slacken the drive belt -1- , at the tensioning roller -3- , turn the belt tensioner clockwise using an open-ended -2- wrench (a/f 32).

Slackening/tensioning the drive belt

3. Remove the drive belt at the tensioning roller under the generator.
4. Allow the belt tensioner to slide back to its initial position.
5. Remove number plate on the rear apron. The special screw can be removed through the additional bore -arrow-.

6. Remove special screw for engine carrier (M10 x 130) -1- through the additional bore on the rear carrier.

Tool: Change-over ratchet -1- with long extension (half-inch).

Removing special screw through additional bore

6.1. Pull spacer sleeve -2- out towards the right at the top (past the power-steering pump pulley). Press the engine carrier back slightly if necessary.
6.2. Pull out screw -1- using a bar magnet -2- or use a magnetic socket-wrench insert.

7. Slide the drive belt (flat side) up past the coolant pump pulley.

8. Turn the drive belt 90 degrees and guide the flat side past the vibration damper and remove it.

9. Check pulley for damage.

Installing drive belt

Information

Specifications for wrench sizes (a/f specifications) for screw heads are described as follows:

- Torx screws: (E.) for external Torx, (T.) for internal Torx.

- Hexagon-head bolts (internal and external hexagon): Wrench size (a/f)

1. Guide the drive belt with the flat side -1- first past the vibration damper -2-.
If you intend to reuse the old belt, make sure to observe the running direction marked earlier.
1.1. Position the belt on the running track on the vibration damper.

2. Guide the drive belt -1- to the left past the coolant pump pulley.

Guiding drive belt through coolant pump

2.1. Then guide the flat side of the belt through between the pulley and engine carrier -arrow-.

3. Fit the drive belt on the pulleys for the air conditioning compressor -4- , power-steering pump -3- and generator -2-.
3.1. Then, pre-position it on the tensioning roller -7-.

Drive belt routing

4. Turn the belt tensioner -3- clockwise as far as it will go using an open-ended wrench -2- (a/f 32) and at the same time place the drive belt -1- on the tensioning roller under the generator.

Slackening/tensioning the drive belt

5. Allow the belt tensioner to slide back slowly into tensioning position.

Information

- The drive belt must be positioned correctly on all pulleys.

6. Check belt routing and position.
7. Fit special screw for engine carrier (M10 x 130) -1- with the spacer sleeve -2-.
7.1. To do this, insert the screw through the bores in the rear apron and rear carrier and the spacer sleeve.

8. Tighten special screw.
=> Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ftlb.)

9. Fit number plate.

Subsequent work

1. Install pressure pipe.
=> 214119 Removing and installing pressure pipe.
2. Install air cleaner housing.
=> 242519 Removing and installing air cleaner housing - Turbo.
