Preliminary work

1. Remove upper part of lid lock. -> 558719 Removing and installing upper part of rear lid lock - section on "Removing" 558719 Removing and Installing upper Part of Rear Lid Lock
2. Remove wiper motor for rear window wiper system. -> 923419 Removing and installing wiper motor for rear window wiper system - section on "Removing" 923419 Removing and installing wiper motor for rear window wiper system
3. Remove rear window. -> 648619 Removing and installing rear window - section on "Removing" Service and Repair
4. Replace rear lid moulding. -> 664755 Replacing rear lid moulding - section on "Replacing"
5. Remove rear lid. -> 559019 Removing and installing rear lid - section on "Removing" Removal and Replacement
6. Remove electrical components (depending on equipment).
6.1. Remove antenna amplifier. -> 918419 Removing and installing antenna amplifier - section on "Removing" Service and Repair
6.2. Remove control unit for antenna amplifier. -> 918619 Removing and installing control unit for antenna amplifier - section on "Removing" Service and Repair

Disassembling rear lid

Information

Some of the repair illustrations show only one side of the vehicle. Naturally, some steps also have to be performed on the opposite side of the vehicle as well. These must be carried out as a mirror image of the steps shown.

1. Loosen supports for rubber stop at the sides by turning them 90° with a screwdriver and remove them.

2. Unclip water drains at the bottom -1-.

3. Remove adjusting elements.
3.1. Mark the position of both parts of the adjusting element -1 - 2- with respect to each other.

3.2. Loosen fastening screws -3- and remove adjusting element.
4. Unclip brackets for wire harness -1- at the locking mechanisms -2- using a screwdriver and remove them.

5. Pull brackets for wire harness out of the two locking mechanisms -A, B-.

6. Unscrew fastening screws -2- on the bracket for the pneumatic spring -1-.

7. Remove number plate bracket if necessary.
8. Drill out blind rivets -2- on bracket for rear spoiler -1-.

9. Unclip guides for wire harness -1- using a screwdriver -2-.

Assembling rear lid

Information

1. Fit supports for rubber stop at the sides and screw them in by turning them 90° with a screwdriver.

2. Fit water drains with arrow -1- inwards.

3. Install adjusting elements.
3.1. Fit adjusting elements -1 - 2- at the marked position.

3.2. Tighten fastening screws -3- to => Tightening torque: 6 Nm (4.5 ftlb.).
4. Press in brackets for wire harness -1- at the locking mechanisms -2-.

Information

The bracket for the wire harness must be replaced during assembly.

5. Guide in brackets for wire harness -A- and press in locking mechanism -B-.

6. Tighten fastening screws -2- for bracket for pneumatic spring -1- to => Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.).

7. Install number plate bracket if necessary.
8. Rivet bracket for rear spoiler -1- to the rear lid with blind rivets -2-. Hand riveting tool Nr.124-1 Pos.1

9. Clip in guides for wire harness -1-.

1. Install rear lid. -> 559019 Removing and installing rear lid - section on "Installing" Removal and Replacement

3. Install control unit for antenna amplifier. -> 918619 Removing and installing control unit for antenna amplifier - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
4. Install antenna amplifier. -> 918419 Removing and installing antenna amplifier - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
5. Replace rear lid moulding. -> 664755 Replacing rear lid moulding - section on "Replacing"
6. Install upper part of lid lock. -> 558719 Removing and installing upper part of rear lid lock - section on "Installing" 558719 Removing and Installing upper Part of Rear Lid Lock
