Removing lower trailing arm

WARNING

Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly

- Risk of squashing
- Risk of damage to components

-> Wear personal protective gear.
-> Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

Information

- The pictures shown in this document may differ from the original.

- However, this does not affect the validity and relevance of the pictures.

Lower trailing arm

1. Unscrew the fastening screw -2- for the spring strut -3- and at the same time, raise the axle support -1- as far as required using a suitable jack -4- so that the fastening screw can be pushed out easily.

Removing spring strut mounting

2. Fix the upper trailing arm -2- in place using spring tensioner VW 552, -1-.
The spring tensioner is engaged in the top opening of the wheel housing and in the upper trailing arm and is tensioned slightly to avoid damaging the upper ball joint -3-.

Securing upper trailing arm

3. Remove the jack.
4. Loosen the lock nut -1- on the bottom ball joint -2-. To prevent damage to the ball pin -3- when pressing it off, only loosen the nut until it is sitting flush on the ball pin.

Pressing off ball pin

5. Make sure not to damage the dust bellows on the ball joint.
Fit the ball joint puller T10187, -4- over the ball joint -2- and ball pin -3- and carefully press the ball joint out of the trailing arm -5-.
6. Mark the eccentric screws -1- for the adjusting camber and caster on the chassis subframe with a coloured pen -A, B- (facilitates fitting during re-installation).

Marking on eccentric screws

7. Remove the eccentric screws. Make sure that the eccentric screws do not damage the bellows. For this purpose, raise the wheel bearing housing using a suitable jack.
8. Pull (press) the trailing arm out of the chassis subframe mounting points -A-.

Removing trailing arm (shown as an example)

9. Remove the lock nut => Removing ball joint (shown as an example) from the ball joint. Tilt the -trailing arm- down all the way and pull the ball joint carefully out of the wheel bearing housing.

WARNING

Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly

- Risk of squashing
- Risk of damage to components

-> Wear personal protective gear.
-> Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

Information

Information

- All screws and bolts on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle resting on its wheels, or the wheel suspension is lifted with a universal jack. -Dimension X- from lower edge of wing to centre of axle corresponds to vehicle position. For the current height values, please refer to the adjustment values for suspension alignment -> 4495TW Adjustment values for suspension alignment 4495TW Adjustment values for suspension alignment.

Dimension -X-: lower edge of wing to centre of axle (shown as an example)

- Visually inspect all parts.

- Replace self-locking nuts.

- Replace all expansion screws (screws fitted using torque angle tightening procedure).

- Use correct tightening torques and torque angle. -> 4X00IN Tightening torques for front axle 4X00IN Tightening torques for front axle

1. Counter with a screwdriver 9546 when tightening the ball joints if necessary.
2. Carefully insert the pin for the ball joint into the wheel bearing housing and fit the lock nut. => Inserting ball joint (shown as an example) -> 4X00IN Tightening torques for front axle 4X00IN Tightening torques for front axle

Inserting ball joint (shown as an example)

3. Press the trailing arm into the mounting points on the chassis subframe -A-.

4. Insert and fit the eccentric screws -1-. Fit according to the markings -A, B-.-> 4X00IN Tightening torques for front axle 4X00IN Tightening torques for front axle
Raise the wheel bearing housing slightly using a suitable jack to avoid damaging the dust bellows for the steering when tightening the eccentric screws.

Marking on eccentric screws

5. Use a suitable jack to raise the trailing arm and remove spring tensioner VW 552 -1- from the upper trailing arm -2-.

Securing upper trailing arm

6. Raise the axle support -1- as far as required using a suitable jack -4- until the fastening screw -2- slides easily through the spring strut -3- and axle support.
