WM 425219 Removing and installing rear wheel bearing housing (wheel carrier)
Tools
Technical values
Preliminary work
1. Move electric parking brake (EPB) into ]]installation position[[ using the Porsche System Tester. To do this, select ]]Parking brake[[ in the control unit overview. Select ]]Drive links/ checks [All] Move to installation position[[.
2. For vehicles with air suspension:
Bleed the air suspension. -> 4301IN Bleeding and filling the levelling system 4301IN Bleeding and filling the levelling system
WARNING
Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly
- Risk of squashing
- Risk of damage to components
-> Wear personal protective gear.
-> Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
3. Loosen the axle nut (drive shaft mounting on wheel side). (Do not remove it!) This prevents the drive shaft from slipping out when removing the wheel bearing housing. Actuate the brake while doing this.
4. Remove the wheel. -> 440519 Removing and installing wheel - section on "Removing" Removal and Replacement
5. Remove rear level sensor from the front upper wishbone. -> 431955 Replacing rear level sensor - section on "Removing" 431955 Replacing rear level sensor

Information
- To prevent damage to the drive shaft, suspension subframe or transmission flange, slide a protective tube (shop-made) 00000 over the drive shaft.
Wheel bearing housing with upper wishbones
1. Left side only: Break off and remove protective plastic ring -1- with a screwdriver. This ensures that the sealing surfaces for the mounting levers can be accessed easily in the next step.

3. Release central connector -1- from the ABS wire harness at the body -a- and pull it off -A-.
Plug connection for wire harness for wheel bearing housing
4. Unclip ABS wire harness mounting -2- at the body -B-.
5. Remove the brake caliper from the wheel bearing housing and suspend it at a suitable position in the wheel arch (do not open brake hydraulics!). -> 474119 Removing and installing rear brake caliper - section on "Removing" 474119 Removing and installing rear brake calliper
6. Remove the brake disc for better accessibility if necessary. -> 465319 Removing and installing rear brake disc - section on "Removing" 465319 Removing and installing rear brake disc
7. Use universal drive shaft/wheel hub extractor as of model '86 Nr.87-1 to press out the pin of the drive shaft by max.=> Length: 10 mm+5 mm. When doing this, check drive shaft clearance on the halfshaft flange.
Pressing out drive shaft, max. 10 mm (shown as an example)
8. Remove the wheel bearing housing from the spring strut. -> 427119 Removing and installing rear spring strut (steel springs) - section on "Removing" 427119 Removing and installing rear spring strut (steel springs), -> 432519 Removing and installing rear spring strut (air springs) - section on "Removing" 432519 Removing and installing rear spring strut (air springs)
The spring strut screws are tensioned. Use a suitable lift with a rubber base.
Carefully press the spring strut down out of the wheel bearing housing.
Make sure not to damage the brake cover plate.

9. Remove the tie rod (toe control arm) at the wheel bearing housing. -> 420919 Removing and installing tie rod (toe control arm) - section on "Removing" 420919 Removing and installing rear tie rod (toe control arm)
10. Secure the wheel bearing housing/drive shaft assembly to prevent it from falling down (second mechanic required!)
Remove the screws -1, 2- on the inside of the two upper wishbones from the rear axle carrier.
Threaded joint on inner wishbones
11. Loosen the lower wishbone -2- at the point where it is fastened to the wheel bearing housing -1-.
Screws on lower trailing arm (shown as an example)
12. Slowly lower a suitable jack and carefully set the wheel bearing housing and drive shaft down.
13. Pull the drive shaft -1- fully out of the wheel bearing housing -2- ( -A- ) and set it aside.

WARNING
Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly
- Risk of squashing
- Risk of damage to components
-> Wear personal protective gear.
-> Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
- The pictures shown in this document may differ from the original.
- However, this does not affect the validity and relevance of the pictures.
Information
- All screws and bolts on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on its wheels, or the wheel suspension is raised with a universal vehicle lift. Dimension -X- , from lower edge of wing to centre of axle corresponds to vehicle position. For the current height values, please refer to the adjustment values for suspension alignment -> 4495TW Adjustment values for suspension alignment 4495TW Adjustment values for suspension alignment.
Dimension X - lower edge of wing to centre of axle (shown as an example)
- Visually inspect all parts.
- Replace self-locking nuts.
- Replace all expansion screws (screws fitted using torque angle tightening procedure).
- Use correct tightening torques and torque angle. -> 4X00IN Tightening torques for rear axle 4X00IN Tightening torques for rear axle
1. Grease the toothing with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste and fit the drive shaft -1- into the wheel bearing housing -2- ( -A- ). When doing this, press the inner joint together tightly.
Inserting drive shaft into wheel bearing housing
Information
- The drive shaft must be pulled in as far as it will go using the fitting tool T10206.
Fitting tool T10206 (shown as an example)
2. Pull the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing.
3. Grease the mounting-face ring of the axle nut with a little Optimoly TA aluminium paste. Screw on the axle nut.
4. After you have pulled the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing, it still needs to be pre-tightened to the specified tightening torque.
Pulling in drive shaft (shown as an example)
4.1. In the first step, "before installation", tighten the drive shaft to => Tightening torque: +130 Nm (+96 ftlb.). To do this, place the wheel bearing housing with the drive shaft and tool on the floor (do not damage the brake cover plate) and pull in the drive shaft. 2. A second mechanic is required! -arrow-
4.2. The second tightening step is performed when the wheel bearing housing is installed in the section on "Subsequent work"! Observe the correct tightening torque. -> 4X00IN Tightening torques for front axle 4X00IN Tightening torques for front axle
Information
Before installing the shaft, replace the lock ring (circlip) on the shaft as well as the shaft sealing ring in the final drive -> 392219 Removing and installing sealing ring for output flange 392255 Replacing sealing ring for halfshaft flange (without locking differential).
Make sure not to damage the sealing ring when guiding the shaft into the final drive.
- The inner end of the drive shaft must be held with both hands at the joint and inserted into the rear axle differential with a quick jerk. The outer joint must be held by a second mechanic in order to prevent damage.
- Check that the joint is seated correctly in the rear axle differential: Hold the joint with both hands and pull outwards.
- Visually check that the plastic protective rings are flush on the rear axle differential.
5. Left side: Replace the protective plastic ring on the transmission side, which you broke off during removal.
6. Use a new sealing ring in the rear axle differential and a new protective ring and circlip on the drive shaft.
7. Fit the wheel bearing housing (second mechanic required). First, fit the drive shaft on the rear axle differential housing with a quick, strong tap.
To make installation easier, raise the wheel carrier slightly with a universal jack! Use a rubber base to prevent the wheel carrier from slipping! => Tie rod assembly aid (shown as an example)
