Preliminary work

Preliminary work for removing and installing transmission

1. Move Tiptronic selector lever to position - N -.
2. Disconnect the battery. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery

4. Loosen the rear cardan shaft at the transfer gear and make sure that it does not become kinked, e.g. tie it up. -> 393519 Removing and installing rear cardan shaft - section on "Removing" 393519 Removing and installing rear cardan shaft

Removing transmission

Information

- When removing the engine, ensure that the torque converter in the automatic transmission does not slip out of the transmission.

- Keep the torque converter pressed in position using a screwdriver when removing the engine.

Information

Some of the repair illustrations show only one side of the vehicle. Naturally, some steps also have to be performed on the opposite side of the vehicle as well. These must be carried out as a mirror image of the steps shown.

1. Move selector lever to position - N -.
2. Unclip the wire harness -1- for the oxygen sensors on the left cylinder head cover out of the holder -2-.

4. Remove primary catalytic converter on the left.
Spray the fastening screws on the primary catalytic converter with penetrating oil and leave to take effect.
Loosen the fastening screws -1- (only on the left-hand side) on the catalytic converter.

5. Loosen the fastening screws -1- for the holders -2- of the left and right primary catalytic converters -3- on the transmission.

6. Loosen the fastening screws -1- on the left and right for the rear holders -2- of the catalytic converters on the transmission.

7. Remove the catalytic converters and set them aside.
8. Release electric plug connections -1, 2- at the right of the transfer gear -a, b- and pull them off -A, B-.

9. Release electric plug connections -1, 2- at the bottom of the transfer gear -a, b- and pull them off -A, B-.

10. Mark gearshift position - N - -1- on the automatic transmission -2- with a suitable pen -A-.

11. Remove shift cable -3- on the automatic transmission -4-. -> 371519 Removing and installing selector lever cable - section on "Removing" Service and Repair

11.1. Unclip the cable -3- at the front on the ball joint -1- using disassembly tool Nr.21.
11.2. Unscrew fastening screws -2- at the rear shift cable -3-.
12. Loosen fastening nuts -8- on the exhaust clamp (clamping sleeve) -3- between the catalytic converter and exhaust system. Slide exhaust clamps onto the exhaust system. The exhaust clamps must not be re-used. -> 260119 Removing and installing exhaust system - section on "Removing" Service and Repair

13. Loosen fastening screws -1- for the heat shield -2- at the automatic transmission -3-.

14. Remove heat shield.
15. Detach holder -1- for ATF lines at the front of the transmission.

16. Unclip ATF lines -A-.
17. Place a suitable container underneath to catch emerging ATF.
Loosen the fastening screw -1- on the ATF lines -2- at the bottom of the transmission -3-.

18. Remove ATF lines.
Close off the ATF lines and transmission bores using suitable stoppers.
19. Lower the automatic transmission -1- at the rear.





Lowering transmission

19.1. Lift the automatic transmission -1- using a suitable jack -2-.
19.2. Loosen the fastening screws -3- on the automatic transmission at the rear transverse strut of the automatic transmission.
19.3. Use the jack to lower the automatic transmission until the fastening screws for the ATF lines at the ATF heat exchanger can be loosened.
20. Place a suitable container underneath to catch emerging ATF.
Loosen the fastening screws -1- for the ATF lines -2- on the ATF heat exchanger -3- and pull them out.
Close off the ATF lines and bores in the heat exchanger using suitable stoppers.

21. Loosen fastening screws -1- for the ATF heat exchanger -2- at the transmission.

22. Release electric plug connection -1- from the thermal management control valve -2- ( -a- ) and pull it off -A-.

23. Unscrew fastening screws -1- for the coolant line holder -2- , bend holder to one side.

24. Release the electric plug connection -1- of the crankshaft pulse sender at the bottom of the transmission -a- and pull it off -A-.

Loosen the tie-wrap at the coolant line holder on the left if necessary.
25. Unclip the hose -1- for the transmission vent from the holder -2-.

26. Pull off vacuum hose -1- for the vacuum supply at the T-piece -2-.
Unclip the vacuum line -3- from the holder -4-.

27. Remove plug -1- used to seal the converter assembly opening.

28. Remove converter screws. Follow the steps below to do this. -> 325019 Removing and installing torque converter - section on "Removing" Service and Repair

29. Turn crankshaft clockwise using special tool socket-wrench insert 97140.
30. Insert the special tool locating pins 95950 into the front bore on the converter bell housing -arrow- and hold it upwards with light pressure until it engages when the crankshaft is turned.
31. Position special tool bit insert 96880 on converter screw through opening in the engine block, connect bit snap-on head and special tool insert 96870 one after the other.

32. Remove special tool locating pins 95950 before loosening the converter screws.
33. Unscrew converter screw and twist out.
34. Complete the steps described above for the other five screws.
35. Position the transmission -1- on the jack -2- and secure it with a tension strap -3- to prevent it from tipping downwards.

36. Loosen the fastening screws -1- for the transmission at the engine.

37. Tilt the engine as far down as possible at the rear by twisting at the engine bridge.
38. Remove transmission.
Get a second mechanic to help.





Removing transmission

38.1. Remove the transmission -1- from the engine by tipping.
38.2. Carefully pull the transmission to the rear -A- and lower slowly using the jack -B-.
38.3. Make sure that no wire is kinked or torn off when removing it.
38.4. Make space to remove it by tipping or twisting the transmission if necessary.

Installing transmission

CAUTION

Damage to converter screws due to excessive tightening torque.

-> Observe adjusting value for torque wrench. 65 Nm (48 ftlb.) on torque wrench = 85 Nm (63 ftlb.) on the screw.

Information

- Because of the limited space between the engine and the radiator, the fixing pin can only be inserted at one point.

- Insert special tool in front of the fixing point in the belt pulley and then turn towards the fixing point. To remove, turn engine back slightly and remove fixing pin.

- A second fitter is required to unscrew or screw in the converter screws.

- The converter screws must be replaced.

- The adaptation values must be reset using the Porsche System Tester when the transmission is renewed/replaced. => Removing and installing Tiptronic control unit

1. Fix engine to the crankshaft with special tool fixing pins 9595.

2. Insert special tool centring pin 9689 in converter.

3. Gradually run in transmission.

A second mechanic is required





Running in transmission

3.1. Lift the transmission -1- using the jack -2- ( -A- ) and push forwards -B- until it can be positioned on the engine.
The dowel sleeves on the engine must slip perfectly into the bores on the transmission bell housing.
4. Fit the transmission screws -1- with the holders -2- for the primary catalytic converters => Initial tightening: 38 Nm (28 ftlb.). Then tighten to => Final tightening: 90° (67 ftlb.).-> 373519 Removing and installing transmission - section on "Installing"

5. Remove special tool centring pin 9689 and fit converter screws. For tightening torques refer to -> 373527 Removing and mounting transmission - section on "Mounting" 373527 Removing and mounting transmission, -> 325019 Removing and installing torque converter - section on "Installing" Service and Repair
6. Screw in new converter screws:
7. Place screw on special tool bit insert 9688 and screw in screw.

8. Position bit snap-on head and special tool insert 9687 and screw in screw, but do not tighten.
9. Turn crankshaft clockwise with special tool socket wrench insert 9714.
10. Insert special tool locating pins 9595 into the front bore on the converter bell housing -arrow- and hold it in place with light pressure until it engages when the crankshaft is turned. This sets the position for the next screw.

11. Complete the steps described above for the other five screws.
12. Remove special tool fixing pins 9595 before tightening the converter screws to the specified torque. => Tightening torque: 85 Nm (63 ftlb.)
13. Insert plug for converter assembly opening. To do this, moisten the groove on the plug with water.

14. Starting at the cut-out in the engine block -1- , press in the plug all the way round from position -2-3-.

15. Check the position of the plug -2- using an inspection mirror -1-. When doing this, make sure that the sealing lip -3- makes contact all the way round.

16. Push the vacuum hose -1- onto the T-piece -2-.

Clip vacuum line -3- into the holder -4-.
17. Clip the hose -1- for the transmission vent into the holder -2-.

18. Connect the electric plug connection of the crankshaft pulse sender at the bottom of the transmission and lock it.
Secure the wire harness with a tie-wrap if necessary.

19. Place the holder -2- for the coolant lines in position on the transmission and fit the fastening screw -1-.

20. Connect the electric plug connection -1- to the control valve -2- ( -A- ) and lock it -a-.

21. Position ATF heat exchanger -2- on the transmission and fit the fastening screws -1- to => Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ftlb.).

22. Position ATF lines -2- on the ATF heat exchanger -3-.
Ensure that the lines are seated correctly.

23. Fit fastening screws -1- to => Tightening torque: 8 Nm (6 ftlb.).
24. Position ATF lines -2- with holder in the transmission -3-.
Ensure that the lines are seated correctly.

25. Secure holder -1- for ATF lines to the front of the transmission.
Screw in fastening screw to => Tightening torque: 20 Nm (15 ftlb.).

26. Fit fastening screws -1- of the heat shield -2- to the automatic transmission -3- to => Tightening torque: 15 Nm (11 ftlb.).

27. Lift automatic transmission -1- at the rear and fit it.





Lowering transmission

27.1. Lift automatic transmission -1- using a suitable jack -2- and position the bores in the transverse strut at the threaded bores in the body.
27.2. Tighten the fastening screws -3- of the automatic transmission to the rear transverse strut of the automatic transmission to => Initial tightening: 50 Nm (37 ftlb.) and then fit to => Final tightening: 90°.
27.3. Lower the jack and remove it from the vehicle.
28. Push new exhaust clamps (clamping sleeves) -3- onto the exhaust pipes. The threaded joint must be pointing downwards.

29. Fit shift cable -3- on automatic transmission -4-. -> 371519 Removing and installing selector lever cable - section on "Installing" Service and Repair

29.1. Clip in shift cable -3- at the ball joint -1-.
29.2. Fit the fastening screws -2-.
30. Plug in electric plug connections -1, 2- at the bottom of the transfer gear -A, B- and lock them -a, b-

32. Fit the front cardan shaft. -> 390219 Removing and installing front cardan shaft - section on "Installing" 390219 Removing and Installing Front Cardan Shaft
33. Place the catalytic converters in position on the engine and transmission assembly.
33.1. Position the fastening nuts -1- of the left primary catalytic converter and fit them.

33.2. Position the primary catalytic converters -1- at the gear supports -2- and fit the fastening screw -1-.

34. Clip the wire harness -1- for the oxygen sensor on the left at the cylinder head cover into the holder -2-.

Subsequent work

Subsequent work for removing and installing transmission

1. Fit the rear cardan shaft. -> 393519 Removing and installing rear cardan shaft - section on "Installing" 393519 Removing and installing rear cardan shaft
2. Remove engine support. -> 1001IN Supporting engine on the body 1001IN Supporting the engine on the body
3. Connect the battery. -> 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery 2X00IN Work instructions after disconnecting the battery
4. Check ATF level and top up if necessary. -> 370235 Checking and topping up ATF 370235 Checking and Topping Up ATF
