Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Testing and Inspection
WM 3700AN Eliminating transmission symptoms - Teaching reverse gear transmission adaptation on Tiptronic transmission (I-no. G1G) (Jerking and knocking noise when engaging reverse gear/SY3310)
General information
Symptom
When engaging reverse gear (position R) on a vehicle with Tiptronic transmission (I-no. G1G), the vehicle can start jerking and a (knocking) noise may be heard at the same time.
Cause, date of introduction and remedial action
Cause
There may be jerking in the transmission and a (knocking) noise may be heard when shifting from position P or N to reverse gear.
Date of introduction
A new transmission with optimised software has been installed since 12.11.2010.
Remedial action
- The Tiptronic transmission can be adapted without using the PIWIS Tester.
If a complaint is received in relation to a vehicle produced before the date of introduction specified above
- under the following conditions:
- Engine is at operating temperature
- Engine is running at idle speed (open the bonnet on hybrid vehicles)
- Vehicle is stationary (footbrake actuated)
- Transmission oil temperature > 65° Celsius (read out the temperature using PIWIS Tester II if necessary)
- Carry out transmission adaptation:
=> Engage reverse gear (position R) from position N and
=> Wait at least 3 seconds before engaging position N again.
=> Repeat this procedure until the fault is corrected or up to ten times.
End of remedial action.
