General information

Symptom

When engaging reverse gear (position R) on a vehicle with Tiptronic transmission (I-no. G1G), the vehicle can start jerking and a (knocking) noise may be heard at the same time.

Cause, date of introduction and remedial action

Cause

There may be jerking in the transmission and a (knocking) noise may be heard when shifting from position P or N to reverse gear.

Date of introduction

A new transmission with optimised software has been installed since 12.11.2010.
Remedial action
- The Tiptronic transmission can be adapted without using the PIWIS Tester.

If a complaint is received in relation to a vehicle produced before the date of introduction specified above
- under the following conditions:

- Engine is at operating temperature

- Engine is running at idle speed (open the bonnet on hybrid vehicles)

- Vehicle is stationary (footbrake actuated)

- Transmission oil temperature > 65° Celsius (read out the temperature using PIWIS Tester II if necessary)
- Carry out transmission adaptation:

=> Engage reverse gear (position R) from position N and

=> Wait at least 3 seconds before engaging position N again.

=> Repeat this procedure until the fault is corrected or up to ten times.

End of remedial action.
