Replacing steering pressure line
Replacing the steering pressure line -2- refers to the pressure hose/pressure line assembly.
The steering pressure line -2- is fitted on the steering gear and also on the plug-in coupling (connection point) in the rear sill area.

Preliminary work
1. Raise the vehicle -> 400000 Lifting the vehicle.

Information
- The plug-in lines (plug-in couplings) for the steering and clutch hydraulics have been changed. Modified plug-in coupling system used as of model year 2009.
- As of model year 2009, the plug-in couplings are no longer loosened by screwing them apart.
- From model year 2009 onwards, the lines must be pulled apart after releasing the plug connection. Use the loosening tool 9780 to release the connection.

Plug-in coupling (steering and clutch hydraulics)
1. Loosen the pressure line (thinner line) at the connection point (plug-in coupling) -arrow- in the rear sill area on the left.

1.1. Loosen the pressure line (thinner line) - up to model year 2008

Remove circlip -D- from the pressure line (thinner line) -2-. Loosen (unscrew) the plug-in coupling. When loosening the threaded joint -A- , turn and counter at the hexagon on the plug-in coupling -B-.
Collect hydraulic fluid in a container.

Releasing plug-in coupling (as of model year 2009)
Release the plug-in coupling using the loosening tool 9780.
To do this, fit the special tool on the loosening sleeve plate -3- and insert it as far as it will go over the 60° chamfer.
If the tool is turned 180° before fitting, it cannot be inserted.
The 60° chamfer on the loosening tool must be facing the 60° chamfer from the connector (line -1- )!
Once you have released the plug-in coupling (by inserting the loosening tool), pull the lines apart -arrows-.

Collect hydraulic fluid in a container. Close off lines with suitable stoppers (e.g. from new lines) to prevent damage in the sealing area. Alternatively, cover the plug-in couplings using a clean, lint-free cloth.
2. Loosen pressure and return lines at the steering gear. To do this, loosen the hexagon socket-head bolt -arrow- and remove the retainer plate (with the front wheels turned in as required). Close off lines or use a collecting container.

3. Open the line bracket -arrow- , unclip the pressure line and remove it.

1. Insert new pressure line in the vehicle. Do not close line bracket yet near the connection point for the rear sill area on the left.
2. Fit (attach) the pressure line (thinner line) at the connection point.

Fitting the pressure line
Before inserting the return line, remove the holder collar and screws, which are no longer required, from the connector on the rear return line.
Check that the plug-in coupling is engaged correctly using special tool test tool 9623. Insert special tool into the groove and check that the connector is seated correctly in the plug-in coupling by applying slight pressure. The connector must not slide out. The plug-in coupling is designed so that there is axial play of approx. 1 mm in the plug-in coupling.

2.2. Fit (attach) the pressure line (thinner line) - as of model year 2009
Connecting lines/available spare parts
Replace the O-ring -7- and axial spring -5- if necessary. Then connect the lines (plug-in coupling) -1 und 2- ( -(arrow)- ).
Check that the plug-in coupling is locked correctly.
Locked plug-in coupling
Pull on the connector -1- to check that the plug-in coupling is locked (push and pull slightly in axial direction).
Counter at the plug-in sleeve -2- while doing this.
If the plug-in coupling is locked correctly, you should be able to feel slight axial play between the connector -1- and plug-in sleeve -2-. A plug-in coupling cannot be partly locked.
Another sure sign of a correctly locked plug-in coupling is the bulbous shape of the axial spring -5-.
3. Fit pressure and return lines at the steering gear -arrow-.

4. Close all line brackets (retaining clips) and fit the spacers (clips) between the pressure and return line. Check the positioning of the steering lines once again and adjust them if necessary.
Subsequent work
1. Fill steering hydraulics with new Pentosin and bleed the steering system -> 480201 Checking power-steering fluid level Testing and Inspection.
