WM 519149 Eliminating noise symptoms - Reworking tunnel in underbody (Whistling noise from rear axle area/SY3110)

General information

Symptom

Squeaking noise can be heard from the rear axle area when driving slowly around corners.

Cause, date of introduction and remedial action

Cause

Too much PVC material (seam seal in underbody) may have been applied due to different production processes, resulting in protruding bits of PVC.

Date of introduction

A different process has been used in production since 12.02.2010.

Remedial action

In the event of a complaint in relation to a vehicle manufactured before the specified date of introduction, cut off the protruding bits of PVC on the underbody.

Tools and materials

- Knife

Reworking tunnel in underbody

1. Remove exhaust system, see -> 260119 Removing and installing exhaust system - section on "Removing" .
2. Remove heat shield in the cardan tunnel ( -item 1- ).

Information

- The PVC seam seal must still seal the seams fully => the PVC seam seal must not be damaged.

3. Cut off only the protruding bits ( -item 2- ) of the PVC seam seal close to the cardan shaft ( -item 1- ) using a knife.

4. Install heat shield in the cardan tunnel ( -item 1- ).

5. Install exhaust system, see -> 260119 Removing and installing exhaust system - section on "Installing" .
