STONE CHIP PROTECTION

Information

This I.S. Note contains information on maintaining stone chip protection of underbody and lower body panels that have been repaired. Basic guidelines for the application of various protective materials are also included.

Filing Instructions

File this I.S. Note in the M.R. 171 binder.

PROTECTIVE MATERIALS

Two types of materials are used to maintain stone chip protection after repair. The first is a black, rubberized coating used on the vehicle underbody and on some Alliance rocker panels. The second is a vinyl plastisol material that is color coated with a catalyzed acrylic enamel.

Rubberized Coatings

Two rubberized coatings are approved for use on Renault vehicles. They are: AMC/Jeep/Renault undercoating, P/N 89 83 100 004, and Kent Industries Rubberguard, P/N 80420.

The Kent Industries product is used on Alliance rocker panels as well as the vehicle underbody. The AMC/Jeep/Renault undercoating is used only on the vehicle underbody.

Both coatings can be applied with a 3M Body Shutz gun, P/N 08997, or Kent Industries FGG gun, P/N 30025. The Kent Industries coating and both application guns are available from local Kent Industries representatives. The AMC/Jeep/Renault undercoating is available from your PDC.

Vinyl Plastisol Coating

The vinyl plastisol coating approved for use on Renault vehicles is Ditzler DX-54. This product is applied to the repair area after surface preparation and prior to color coat application. It is color coated with a catalyzed acrylic enamel.

DX-54 is available from local jobbers and is applied with a standard siphon spray gun.

PROTECTIVE MATERIAL APPLICATION

Refer to the following basic guidelines when applying protective materials. Also be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions for optimum results.

1. Mask the area to be coated.

2. Apply Ditzler Metal Prep DX-579 or an equivalent conditioner to any bare metal surface.

NOTE: When preparing galvanized surfaces for coating, also apply Ditzler Galvaprep DX-520 to any bare metal after applying Metal Prep.

3. Prime the repair area with an epoxy chromate primer such as Ditzler DP40/401.

4. Apply the rubberized or vinyl plastisol coating to a thickness of approximately 30 mils. Refer to the protective coating chart for coating applications.

5. Apply a color coat if required.
