TRUNK WATER LEAKS

WORKSHOP MANUAL UPDATES

This I.S. Note contains additional information and procedures for sealing the trunk area on L42-M42 models.

PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.

2. Remove both rear lamp covers and taillamp assemblies.

3. Remove the jack, lug wrench, floor mat and quarter trim panels from the trunk.

4. Apply 3M 08505 or 08646 seam sealer to rear bumper fascia attaching screws A, B, D (Fig. 1).

5. Apply the same 3M seam sealer to the inner A and outer B flange seams of the fuel filler door pocket (Fig. 2).

6. Apply 3M 08874 sprayable sealer to the quarter panel-to-rear end panel seam 1 on both sides (Fig. 3).

7. Apply the same 3M sprayable sealer to the inside trunk floor-to-quarter panel seam C on both sides (Fig. 4).
8. Paint all visible seams after the sealer has dried with brushable or spray-type touch up paint.

9. Remove the old gasket from each taillamp assembly with 3M 08908 adhesive remover and a scraper.

10. Install a replacement gasket on each taillamp assembly and install the taillamp and rear lamp covers.

11. Install the trim panels, floor mat, jack and lug wrench in the trunk.

12. Connect the battery negative cable and reset the clock.

13. On 2-door models, remove the rear seat and both quarter trim panels.

14. Seal the inside of both the quarter windows with 3M 08609 sealer or equivalent.

15. Install the quarter trim panels and rear seat.
