REAR AXLE Attention: Workshop, Parts Department
Information
The torsion bar tube bushings in some L42-M42 rear axles may produce an occasional squeak noise during normal suspension movement.
Elimination of the squeak involves cleaning and lubricating both bushings with a silicone base lubricant as outlined in the following procedure.
Filing Instructions
File this I.S. Note at the back of the plastic binder supplied with the M.R. 240 manual.
TORSION BAR TUBE BUSHING LOCATIONS:
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the left rear wheel and tire.
2. Remove the rear stabilizer bar and disconnect the left rear shock absorber at the suspension arm.
3. Remove the exhaust pipe shield.
4. Remove the left rear wheel parking brake cable from the equalizer and pull it through the frame members.
5. Disconnect the left rear brake line from the tube.
6. Remove the left side torsion bracket attaching bolts. Then loosen (but do not remove) the right side torsion bracket bolts.
7. Slide the left side torsion bracket, suspension arm and outer torsion bar tube off the inner torsion bar tube as an assembly.
8. Clean all the old grease from the outer tube and tube bushings.
9. Apply an even coat of silicone lubricant P/N 77 01 028 179, to both bushings using a long dowel to reach into the tube.
10. Apply an even coat of the silicone lubricant to the bushing contact surfaces of the inner torsion bar tube.
11. Reinstall the outer torsion bar tube, suspension arm and torsion bracket. Keep as much weight off the bushing as possible during installation.
12. Install the left side torsion bracket bolts. Tighten the right and left bracket bolts to 70-80 N-m (52-59 foot-pounds) torque.
13. Connect the left side shock absorber and reconnect the emergency brake cable. Adjust the cable if necessary and install the exhaust pipe shield.
14. Reconnect the brake line to the tube.
15. Install the rear stabilizer bar. Tighten the bar attaching bolts to 45-55 N-m (33-41 foot-pounds) torque.
16. Install the left rear wheel and tire.
17. Bleed the brake system as necessary.
