INCORRECT DIAGNOSIS OF TORQUE CONVERTER AREA OIL LEAK
Information Some of the torque converters used in the MB1 transaxles are being replaced to correct oil leaks because the converter hub bushing appears to be scored. This is not a valid basis for converter replacement on L42-M42 and B42-C42 models.
Unlike AMC/Jeep automatic transmissions, the oil pump is in the rear case on MB1 and all other Renault automatics. This means that the converter hub bushing serves as a pilot-type support bushing only. It does not have to support and contain any oil pump pressure. What appears to be scoring marks on the bushing surface (see illustration) will not result in seal damage or leaks and is not a basis for replacement.
Converter replacement is justified for the following conditions:
^ Impeller, stator, or turbine damage
^ Overruning clutch malfunction
^ Converter contaminated by debris from malfunction of transmission internal components
^ Converter hub outside diameter nicked, scored, damaged by improper installation or rough handling
When tracing an oil leak from the converter area on MB1 transaxles, the most probable causes are an improperly fitted converter oil seal, or a leak from the differential case-to-intermediary case joint. Refer to T.A.M . . . I.S. Note 1E for details.
