REAR WINDOW WIND NOISE/WATER LEAKS

Information

This I.S. Note contains additional procedures for diagnosing and servicing rear window wind noise and/or water leaks on L42-M42 models.

DIAGNOSIS/SERVICE PROCEDURES

Inspection

Check the fit of the exterior rubber molding around the rear window.

^ If the molding fits tightly around the entire perimeter of the window, use Method A to eliminate leaks and/or noise.

^ If the molding does not fit tightly or has pulled away from the glass or body, use Method B to eliminate leaks and/or noise.

METHOD A

1. Remove the rear window interior trim.

2. Seal the rear window from the inside with 3M urethane sealer 08607 or equivalent. Do the entire perimeter of the rear window.

3. Allow the sealer to cure for at least one hour. Then water test the rear window. Apply additional sealer if necessary.

NOTE: Let the sealer cure for at least five hours if high pressure water will be used for water testing.

4. Install the rear window interior trim.

METHOD B

1. Remove or disconnect the following components.

^ Rear quarter trim panels.
^ Rear window interior trim.
^ Rear window exterior rubber seal.
^ Rear window defogger wires.
^ Deck lid.

3. Remove the rear window using Electric Hot Knife J-24709-01. Use the straight or curved hot knife blade to cut the urethane adhesive holding the window in place.
NOTE: Cut the adhesive as close to the interior surface of the window glass as possible.

4. Remove excess urethane adhesive from the body opening mounting flange but do not remove all of the adhesive. Leave a thin layer as a base.

NOTE: If there are any areas where the original adhesive did not adhere to the mounting flange, remove all adhesive from these areas and clean them with urethane solvent. The solvent is included in the installation kit 8124901.

5. Check the window mounting flange surface for uneven areas as follows:

^ Place the window on the flange.

^ Note any flange areas that do not properly contact the window glass. Identify these areas with chalk or grease pencil.

6. Straighten the uneven flange areas with a hammer and dolly or by bending. Spot prime and touch-up any areas where paint was removed during repair.

7. Inspect and remove any urethane that did not adhere to the window glass. Clean these areas thoroughly with urethane solvent.

8. Apply urethane primer to any areas on the window glass and mounting flange where adhesive was removed. Let the primer dry for 20-30 minutes.

9. Align and mark window position in the body prior to installation as follows:

^ Install the rubber molding on the window.

^ Position and align the window in the body opening.

^ Place tape strips on the glass and body for installation alignment reference as shown on page P-37 of the M.R. 241.

^ Cut the tape strips and remove the window.

10. Open both front door windows to prevent interior pressure buildup after window installation.

11. Modify the urethane cartridge nozzle as shown on page P-37 of the M.R. 241 and apply a bead of urethane to the window glass. Make the bead about 7 mm (0.276 in.) wide by 12 mm (0.472 in.) deep and use the rubber molding as a guide during application.

12. Install the rear window immediately after urethane application. Use the tape strips for alignment reference. Then apply hand pressure evenly around the window edge to compress the urethane bead. Do not use excessive pressure or pound on the glass. This could cause excessive squeezeout of the sealer. Remove the alignment tape strips afterward.

13. Support the lower part of the window mounting flange at the center with wood blocks or a similar device. Then hold the window firmly in place with 40 or 50 lb. sandbags and wide strips of tape until the urethane cures. Tape the entire perimeter of the rear window to the body.

NOTE: The urethane takes 5-7 hours to set-up and 24 hours to reach full bond strength, If the vehicle must be driven before 24 hours has elapsed, the tape strips must remain on the vehicle until that time. The owner must be informed of this.

14. Install the deck lid and water test the rear window as outlined on pages R-3 and R-4 of the M.R. 241.

15. Connect the rear defogger wires and install the interior trim.
