ALTITUDE PERFORMANCE
ADJUSTMENTS Attention: Workshop, Parts Department

INFORMATION

This I.S. Note outlines the altitude performance adjustments for all 1983 Renault models with 49-State emission certification, required under a Federal standard. The adjustments will improve driveability performance as well as emissions performance at altitudes other than that for which the vehicles were originally certified.

Any 1983 Renault vehicle that has been so adjusted, must have a unique Vehicle Emission Control Information Update Label installed. The part numbers for these unique labels are provided in the following Adjustment Procedures.

The description of the adjustment procedures and unique labels must be made available at no cost to independent repair facilities and the general public. The adjustments are not warranty eligible and should be made at customer expense.

NOTE: Alliance L42-M42 models do not require any altitude performance adjustments. The electronic control system on these models has a built-in altitude compensating circuit that makes necessary adjustments automatically.

Filing Instructions

I.S. Notes with the M.R. 171 designation are to be filed in the new M.R. 171 binder which will be issued shortly. Until this binder is available, please file all M.R. 171 I.S. Notes at the front of your Mechanical S.R.T manual.

Adjustment Procedures

1. Renault 18i 1348-1358 and Fuego 1368 (non Turbo)
2. Renault Fuego 136A (Turbo)
3. Renault LeCar 1229-1399

1. RENAULT 18i 1348-1358 AND FUEGO 1368 (NON TURBO)

On Renault 18i 1348-1358 and Fuego 1368 (non Turbo) models originally sold for operation at altitudes below 4,000 feet that are being operated above 4,000 feet, activation of the high altitude compensating circuit in the electronic control unit is the only adjustment required. Refer to the following procedure.

FIGURE 1 - FUEL INJECTION DIAGNOSTIC SOCKET PIN LOCATION:

1. Connect a jumper wire between the wires that lead to pins 4 and 5 of the fuel injection diagnostic socket (Fig. 1). This activates the high altitude compensating circuit in the control unit.

2. Install Vehicle Emission Control Update Label, part number 89 33 000 525, next to the original emission control label.

This adjustment applies to all 1983 Renault 18i 1348-1358 and Fuego 1368 (non Turbo) models that were sold for principal use at altitudes below 4,000 feet. Refer to the Vehicle Emission Control Label in the engine compartment to identify these vehicles.

NOTE: Whenever these vehicles are returned to operation at altitudes below 4,000 feet the high altitude compensation circuit jumper wire (pins 4 and 5) must be disconnected and the Vehicle Emission Control Information Update Label, part number 89 33 000 525, must be removed.

FIGURE 2 - RESISTOR CONNECTOR BOARD INSTALLATION:

2. RENAULT FUEGO 136A (TURBO)

On 136A models originally sold for operation at altitudes below 4,000 feet that are being operated at altitudes above 4,000 feet, addition of an altitude compensating resistor connector board to the fuel injection circuit is the only adjustment required. Refer to the following procedure.

1. Remove the side panel from the passenger side of the console.

2. Remove the protective sheath from the connector (Fig. 2).

3. Install the resistor connector board, part reference number 77 01 028 536 in the injection harness connector and install the sheath over the connector/resistor assembly.

4. Install the console side panel and install the Vehicle Emission Control Information Update Label, part reference number 89 33 000 525, next -to the original emission control label.

This adjustment applies to all 1983 Fuego 136A (Turbo) models that were sold for principal use at altitudes below 4,000 feet. Refer to the Vehicle Emission Control Label in the engine compartment to identify these vehicles.

NOTE: Whenever the vehicle is returned to operation at altitudes below 4,000 feet the altitude compensating resistor connector board must be removed from the fuel injection circuit and Vehicle Emission Control Update Label part number 89 33 000 525 must be removed.
3. RENAULT LeCar 1229-1399

On Renault LeCar 1229-1399 models originally sold for operation at altitudes below 4,000 feet that are being operated above 4,000 feet, the ignition timing, as shown on the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label in the engine compartment, should be advanced 5~. The engine idle speed must also be reset to the original specification as shown on this label and according to the procedures outlined in the M.R. 177 manual.

1. Advance ignition timing 5~ from the setting specified on the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label and reset engine idle speed to the original setting indicated on the label.

2. Install Vehicle Emission Control Information Update Label, part number 89 33 000 525, next to the original label.

This adjustment applies to all 1983 1229-1399 models that were sold for principal use at altitudes below 4,000 feet. Refer to the Vehicle Emission Control Label in the engine compartment to identify these vehicles.

NOTE: Whenever the vehicle is returned to operation at altitudes below 4,000 feet the ignition timing and engine idle speed must be reset to the specifications on the original Vehicle Emission Control Information Label and Vehicle Emission Control Update Label part number 89 33 000 525, must be removed.

On 1229-1399 models originally sold for operation at altitudes above 4,000 feet that are being operated below 4,000 feet, the primary main and air jets must be changed and ignition timing and engine idle speed reset as outlined in the following procedure.

1. Replace the original #115 primary main jet in the carburetor with a new #117 primary main jet, part number 77 01 023 390.

2. Replace the original #180 primary air jet in the carburetor with a new #160 primary air jet, part number 08 70 102 301.

3. Reset ignition timing to 3~ BTDC and reset engine idle to the setting indicated on the original Vehicle Emission Control Information Label in the engine compartment.

4. Install Vehicle Emission Control Update Label, part number 89 33 000 526, next to the original label.

This adjustment applies to all 1983 1229-1399 models that were sold for principal use at altitudes above 4,000 feet. Refer to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label in the engine compartment to identify these vehicles.

NOTE: Whenever the vehicle is returned to service at altitudes above 4,000 feet the #115 carburetor primary main jet and the #180 primary air jet must be reinstalled and the ignition timing and idle speed reset to the specifications on the original emission control label and Emission Control Information Update Label part number 89 33 000 526, must be removed.
