Information

This I.S. Note provides service information for the following conditions on MB1 automatic transaxles used in L42-M42 models.

1. RUMBLE OR DRONING NOISE IN 30-45 MPH RANGE
2. OIL LEAK CAUSED BY COOLER LINE HOSE CLAMPS

Filing Instructions

File this I.S. Note in the plastic binder supplied with your T.A.M. . . Manual.

1. RUMBLE OR DRONING NOISE IN 30-45 MPH RANGE

The pinion gear and step down gears in some MB1 transaxles may generate a rumbling or droning noise when accelerating in the 30-45 mph range. In some cases, the noise may also be accompanied by a slight vibration.

Service correction involves verification of the noise condition and replacement of the step down gears and pinion gear/secondary shaft as outlined in the following procedure. Refer to the parts list in this portion of the I.S. Note for necessary repair components.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the engine and transaxle assembly as outlined on pages F-14 through F-17 in the M.R. 240 manual and remove the transaxle assembly from the engine.

CAUTION: Before removing the transaxle from the engine, mark the converter and drive plate for assembly alignment reference.

2. Remove the rear case, intermediary case and converter-differential housing case attaching bolts and separate the three cases.

NOTE: Mark or tag the different length case attaching bolts for assembly reference.

FIGURE 1:

3. Remove and discard the snap rings that retain the pinion gear/secondary shaft and the output shaft in the intermediary case and remove these components along with the step down gears (Fig. 1).

NOTE: During disassembly/assembly operations, inspect the O-rings and seals in the three cases. Replace only those O-rings or seals that are damaged. Do not replace these components as a matter of course during repair.

4. Install the new step down driven gear-pinion gear/secondary shaft assembly in the intermediary case and secure the shaft with a new snap ring.

5. Install the step down drive gear snap ring on the output shaft. Then install the new output shaftstep down drive gear assembly in the intermediary case and install the shaft retaining snap ring.

6. Reassemble the rear case, intermediary case and converter-differential case. Apply AMC/Jeep/ Renault Sealing Compound, P/N 8993539, or Perfect Seal to the case mating surfaces before reassembly. Tighten the case attaching bolts to 25 N-m (18 foot-pounds) torque.

CAUTION: When assembling the three cases, apply sealer to the case gasket surfaces sparingly. Excess sealer could be squeezed into the cases resulting in transaxle fluid contamination or filter clogging. Also be sure the intermediary-to-rear case gasket is properly positioned and does not become folded over or cut during assembly.

7. Mount the transaxle on the engine and install the assembled engine and transaxle in the vehicle.

2. OIL LEAK CAUSED BY COOLER LINE HOSE CLAMPS

The oil cooler line hose clamps on some L42-M42 models may not grip the hose tightly enough.

The leakage can be eliminated by replacing the original hose clamp with an improved clamp, P/N 89 33 000 786.
