A/C SYSTEM SERVICE
Information
When servicing the A/C system for AMC/Jeep/Renault vehicles, observe the following precautions to avoid an excessive amount of compressor oil in the system. An excessive amount of oil will cause compressor vibration and decreased output because of oil restrictions in either the expansion valve, receiver-drier, or condenser.
DISCHARGING THE SYSTEM
The refrigerant must be discharged from the system before replacing any system component except a compressor that has 3-position service valves.
WARNING: Always wear safety goggles when servicing any part of an A/C system containing R-12 refrigerant. R-12 refrigerant can cause severe eye irritation or injury.
Always discharge the system slowly with pressure gauge and manifold assembly J-23575 or equivalent.
CAUTION: Never discharge the system rapidly because the oil in the system will be forced out along with the refrigerant.
SYSTEM COMPONENT REPLACEMENT
Compressor
If only the compressor is being replaced or removed for service, perform the following to avoid excessive amounts of oil in the system.
^ On AMC/Jeep/Alliance/Encore vehicles, front seat (full in) the compressor service valves to isolate the compressor. Remove the valves from the compressor and remove the compressor.
^ On Fuego, 18i, and Le Car vehicles, discharge the system slowly; then remove the compressor.
^ Drain all the oil from the compressor into a container graduated in ounces.
NOTE: If a replacement compressor is to be installed, drain all the oil from it before proceeding.
^ Fill the repaired or replacement compressor with the same amount of oil drained into the graduated container plus one additional ounce. Use AMC/Jeep/Renault Compressor Oil, 813 2400, or equivalent.
NOTE: If the system was discharged rapidly and some of the original oil was forced out along with the refrigerant, refill the compressor according to the following procedure. Drain the remaining oil into a graduated container and record the amount drained. Refill the compressor with the amount drained plus enough additional oil to bring total volume in the compressor to a maximum of 4 ounces.
^ On AMC/Jeep/Alliance/Encore vehicles, back seat (full out) the compressor service valves before attempting to operate the compressor.
CAUTION: The compressor can be damaged if operated with either service valve in the front seated (full in) position, Evaporator - Condenser - Receiver/Drier
If the evaporator, condenser, or receiver/drier must be replaced, add one additional ounce of compressor oil to the system for each component replaced. For example, if only the evaporator is replaced, add one ounce, but if all three components are replaced, add 3 ounces. However, if these components are only being removed for access to other underhood components, do not add oil to the system.
Hoses - Fittings - Service Valves
Before connecting original or replacement hoses, fittings, or valves, always apply a few drops of compressor oil to the threads and O-rings of these components. The oil aids assembly and increases the sealing ability of the various fittings. In addition, when loosening/tightening hoses, always use a second wrench to support the fitting or valve to avoid damaging these components.
