AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL
Information
A correct fluid level and the proper type and quality of fluid are essential to proper operation of Alliance/Encore automatic transaxles. Overfilling or the use of non-factory approved fluid can lead to fluid foaming, fluid overflow from the fill tube and possible erratic shifting. To avoid overfill problems, always check and adjust (add or remove) transaxle fluid when it is at ambient (room) temperature.
A new dipstick was introduced into Alliance/Encore production starting with body sequence numbers E02183 and W13855. The new dipstick has a calibrated oil level OK range on both sides. The side marked "HOT" is only a hot fluid reference check.
Recommended Fluid Level Checking Procedure
1. Place vehicle on a level surface.

2. Start and operate engine at idle speed. With engine running, apply parking brake and move shift lever through all gear ranges then shift into Park. Check fluid level as follows:
a. On models with Systems Sentry (Fig. 1) or with Type I dipstick (Fig. 2), a correct fluid level reading is at but not above the Add mark.

b. On models with the new Type II dipstick (Fig. 3), a correct fluid level reading is between Add and Full marks.
NOTE: The new Type II dipstick can be used on all Alliance/Encore automatic transaxles.
4. When fluid top off is required, add fluid in 0.25 liter (1/2 pint) increments rechecking after each addition.
