COOLING SYSTEM INSPECTION

Information

When servicing an Alliance for cooling system leaks or an engine that has overheated, it is important that certain cooling system components be inspected and/or replaced.

Inspect and/or replace the following:

A. Remote fill housing and heater hose tee connector

B. Radiator inlet tank

C. Radiator bleed fitting cap

D. Thermostat vent ball

E. Heater core inlet and outlet tubes

F. Heater and power steering hoses

Follow these procedures and be sure to observe the refill, pressure test and coolant mixture recommendations also included in this I.S. Note.

FIGURE 1:

INSPECTION PROCEDURES

A. Remote Fill Housing and Heater Hose Tee Connector

Replace the remote fill housing with new housing 8932 001 108. (Fig. 1-A)

Loosen the hose clamps and remove the tee connector from the two halves of the heater hose and from the short fill housing hose.

Replace the tee connector with new metal tee connector 8932 001 125. (Fig. 1-B)

FIGURE 2:

B. Radiator Inlet Tank

Disconnect the inlet hose and radiator cap from the radiator inlet tank (Fig 2).

Inspect the cap filler neck and the hose neck on the inlet tank for distortion. Replace the radiator if either component is distorted out of round or sealing surfaces are not smooth.

FIGURE 3:

C. Radiator Bleed Fitting Cap

Inspect the bleed fitting cap (Fig. 3) for cracks or splits. Replace the cap (and hose clamp) if the cap is damaged.

FIGURE 1:

FIGURE 4:

D. Thermostat Vent Ball

Remove the radiator hose from the water pump (Fig. 1-C) and inspect the thermostat vent ball (Fig. 4). The ball must face upward as shown and must move freely in the vent orifice.

Reposition the thermostat upward if necessary or replace it if the vent ball is stuck or the thermostat is damaged in any way.

FIGURE 5:

E. Heater Core Inlet and Outlet Tubes

Disconnect both heater hoses from the heater core. (Fig. 5) Inspect the inlet and outlet tubes for erosion or a heavy coating of a grayish colored substance causing poor coolant flow.

Replace the heater core if either tube is eroded or heavily coated.
REFILL - PRESSURE TEST - COOLANT MIXTURE RECOMMENDATIONS

Refilling

When refilling the cooling system, be very sure to fill the system completely. Coolant level should be to the very top of the filler neck on the remote fill housing.

Add coolant to the recovery bottle until coolant level is slightly above the full mark on the bottle. The extra coolant helps displace the small amounts of air that become trapped in the system during warm up and cool down cycles.

F. Heater and Power Steering Hoses

Inspect condition and position of power steering supply hose and heater core-to-remote fill hose as follows.

1. Disconnect battery.

2. Inspect hose condition. Replace either hose if leaking.

FIGURE 6:

3. Inspect hose position. If power steering supply hose is not located inboard of heater hose (Fig. 6), or if heater core-to-remote fill hose is touching fuel line clamps (Fig. 6), reposition hoses as outlined in following steps.
4. Cut heater hose tie strap A (Fig. 6). Then loosen and reposition fuel line clamps B away from heater core-to-remote fill hose.

5. Remove power steering reservoir cover and remove fluid from reservoir using suction gun. Lift power steering reservoir up and out of mounting bracket and disconnect supply hose from reservoir.

6. Reposition power steering supply hose so it is inboard of heater core-to-remote fill hose as shown in Figure 6.

7. Connect power steering supply hose to reservoir, install reservoir, and refill reservoir with AMC/Jeep Renault power steering fluid. Secure the power steering supply hose to the engine compartment wiring harness on passenger side frame sill with a tie strap. Be sure hose does not touch engine block.

FIGURE 7:

8. On California models with multi-point fuel injection, check clearance between heater core-toremote fill hose and clamps on cold start injector hose (Fig. 7). Loosen and reposition clamps if they are too close to heater hose.

9. Reconnect battery.

Pressure Test

The cooling system should always be pressure tested after repair and prior to a coolant change. Use a pressure of 14 psi (0.96 bars) to check the system with pressure tester J-24460-01.

NOTE: The 14 psi test pressure is a new specification. Change the pressure test specification on page B-40 of your M.R. 240 to reflect this.

Coolant Mixture

The recommended coolant mixture for Alliance/Encore engines is a 50/50 solution of clean water and AMC/Jeep/Renault All Season Coolant, or Prestone II. This mixture ratio is more than sufficient to protect the engine and cooling system under all operating conditions.

Avoid incorrect coolant mixtures by premixing to the recommended 50/50 ratio before refilling.

NOTE: Use a 50/50 solution even when simply adding coolant to the system.
