NEW DIFFERENTIAL CASE AND BEARINGS
A new Type II differential case with higher capacity differential bearings has been introduced into production of 1984 JBO and JB1 manual transaxles. The new case and bearings entered Alliance/Encore production beginning with transaxle Fab. No. 41135 for JBO transaxles and transaxle Fab. No. 92048 for JB1 transaxles.
FIGURE 1 - TYPE II DIFFERENTIAL CASE:
The Type II differential case is 2 mm larger in diameter and features a thrust shoulder (T) for improved case strength and ring gear positioning (Fig. 1). The differential housing has a larger bore to accommodate the larger diameter case.
The new higher capacity bearings have the same outside diameter as the older bearings. However, the new large diameter bearing is 0.7 mm narrower in width than the bearing used previously. The narrower bearing plus dimensional changes to the differential case require the use of a 1.4 mm thick spring washer (E) and an 0.4 mm thick spacer (R). The spacer is installed between the spring washer and differential case (Fig. 1).

PARTS INTERCHANGEABILITY
The Type II differential case cannot be used in older differential housings because the case bore in these housings is not large enough. However, the new bearings can and should be used, especially when replacing differential bearings to correct a noise condition in Type I different (Fig. 2). Bearing replacement procedure is as follows.
INSTALLING NEW BEARINGS ON TYPE I DIFFERENTIAL CASE
1. Remove old bearings and spring washer.
2. Install three 0.4 mm thick spacers (R), 7703 053 561, on case (Fig. 2).
3. Install 1.4 mm thick spring washer (E), 7703 723 384, on case (Fig. 2).
4. Install large bearing (B), 7700 090 324, on case (Fig. 2).
5. Install small bearing (A), 7703 090 316, on case (Fig. 2).
