REAR BRAKE SERVICE AND PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES

Information

Whenever service is performed on the rear brakes including park brake adjustment, the service and adjustment procedures outlined in this I.S. Note must be followed. It replaces the original edition of I.S. Note 3E issued in December, 1983.

Some 1984 Alliance/Encore models may develop one or more of the following rear brake conditions.

A. A low frequency noise that only occurs during light to moderate brake applications. It may range from a wire brush sound to a low pitch squeal.

B. Park brake hand lever or brake pedal has more than normal travel.

Service correction involves strict adherence to the following Service and Park Brake Adjustment Procedure.

SERVICE AND PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

1. Remove parking brake shield and loosen parking brake cable slightly.

2. Remove rear wheels and brakedrums.

3. Inspect parking brake lever position. Each lever should be bottomed on rear brakeshoe. If either lever is not bottomed and can be moved rearward, parking brake cable adjustment is too tight and must be loosened further.

4. Remove rear brakeshoes from backing plates but do not remove parking brake lever from rear brakeshoe or disconnect parking brake cable from lever.

5. Check parking brake cable movement in support plate and housing. Replace cable if it sticks or binds.

6. Clean support plate ledges thoroughly. Use fine grit emery cloth to remove any scratches, nicks, or burrs. Then apply light coat of brake lubricant 899 3704 to the ledges.
7. Install original or new brakeshoes.

8. Install brakedrums and wheels. Use new stub axle nuts only when original brakeshoes are being reinstalled.

NOTE: If new brakeshoes and/or brakedrums are being installed, use the old stub axle nuts at this time.

9. Manually adjust rear brakes as follows: Turn adjuster star wheel until tight. Mark star wheel with chalk or grease pencil. Using fabricated tool (see illustration), hold self adjusting lever away from starwheel and then back off star wheel one complete revolution.

10. Adjust parking brake cable to obtain 7 or 8 notches movement at parking brake lever. Refer to page K-47 of M.R. 245 for procedure.

NOTE: After brake adjustments are completed, if new brakeshoes and/or brakedrums were installed, remove wheels and brakedrums and discard old stub axle nuts. Coat braking surfaces of new drums with AERODAG-G (P/N 8983 100 005) and reinstall drums and wheels. Use new stub axle nuts to retain drums.
