LUGGAGE RACK ATTACHMENT


Information


On some Alliance models equipped with deck lid luggage racks, the screws that attach the cross rail may loosen slightly. This could allow the rail to rattle occasionally.


Eliminate the cross rail rattle as follows:


Procedure


1. Remove and retain the two screws that attach the cross rail to the deck lid. Remove the cross rail.


2. Move the outer skid strips aside to expose the rubber well nuts at each side of the deck lid. Remove the well nuts.


3. Touch up any bare edges of well nut holes with an anti-corrosion primer such as Ditzler DP 40/401. Colorcoat the area around the holes, if necessary.


4. Install molly jack nuts, in kit 8983 100 026, into the original well nut holes as follows:


a. Install the nut G274 741, followed by the flat washer G941 7373, on the screw G941 4291. Thread nut onto screw to within 3.2 mm (1/8-in) of screw head.

b. Thread the screw through the jack nut until 2-3 screw threads extend beyond bottom end of jack nut.

JACK NUT INSTALLATION:

c. Seat the nut against the flat washer and top of the jack nut. Insert jack nut into the deck lid hole (see illustration).
d. Seat (expand) the jack nut by holding the screw with a screwdriver and tightening the nut with an open end wrench (see illustration).


e. Transfer screw, nut and flat washer to remaining jack nut after seating first jack nut and repeat procedure.
5. Align the outer skid strips with the jack nuts. Reinstall the strips and secure the cross rail, using the original attaching screws. Tighten the screws with 2.5 N-m (22 in.lbs.) torque.
