STEERING COLUMN SOUEAK

Information

The steering column on some Alliance models may produce a squeak when the steering wheel is being turned.

To eliminate the squeak, inspect and service steering column components as follows.

FIGURE 1:

PROCEDURE

1. Service the steering gear and steering shaft lower bushing as follows:

A. Coat steering gear input shaft seal A (Fig. 1) with power steering fluid.

FIGURE 2:

B. Coat the 2-piece lower steering shaft-totoeboard bushing with Molycote 33. Pull boot 2 back to expose bushing 3 (Fig. 2). Separate the bushing halves and apply the Molycote 33. Realign the bushing halves, install the boot, and turn steering wheel left and right.

^ If squeak persists, proceed to step 2.
2. Inspect and service the upper steering shaft bushings or bearings as follows:

A. Remove upper steering shaft bushings/bearings 4 (Fig. 2) as outlined on pages G-52 and G-53 in the M.R. 240. Service the bushings/bearings as follows:
NOTE: Power steering models are equipped with two needle bearings. Manual steering models are equipped with either two steel bushings or one upper needle bearing and one lower steel bushing.

B. If the bushings/bearings are in good condition, apply a heavy coating of Molycote 33 to the bushings/bearings and reinstall them as outlined on pages G-53 and G-54 of the M.R. 240.

C. If the bushings/bearings are scored or damaged, coat replacements with Molycote 33 and install them as outlined on pages G-52 and G-53 of the M.R. 240.

During reassembly, check the clearance between the steering wheel and the steering column lower cover. There must be 3 - 7 mm (0.12 - 0.27 in.) between them. If clearance is not correct, or the wheel touches the cover, loosen upper steering shaft keybolt 1 (Fig. 2). Then pull the steering wheel and shaft outward to obtain correct clearance. Retighten keybolt 1 to 30 N-m (22 ft.lbs.) torque.
