Correct solenoid placement is required for proper transmission operation. Reversed solenoids will cause 2nd gear starts. Refer to the figure below for proper assembly.

Note
The EL-1 solenoid usually has some form of identification stamped on it, such as a "1" or "1H", and will be closest to the pressure regulator valve.
