PARTS & SERVICE PROCEDURE REVISION
The 5th gear retainer (detent) for the JB1 and JB3 Manual Transaxle has been replaced by a new Retainer (Detent Assembly) PN T0723388, Figure 1. If replacement of the 5th gear retainer is required, the following adjustment procedure MUST be performed.
Please make a note referencing this TSB 21-60-89 on pages 2, 4, 17 and 36 in your B.V. JB Component Service Manual (Revised August, 1986) 8980 010 430.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
This procedure can be performed on the vehicle if a 5th gear retainer assembly replacement is required, or during a transaxle reconditioning as required.
JB1 TRANSAXLE
1. Shift the transaxle into 4th gear.
2. Remove 5th gear retainer.
3. Install shim (washer) PN T3053606 on the new retainer (detent) PN T0723388.
4. Install the retainer and tighten to 19 N-m (14 ft.lbs.) torque.
JB3 TRANSAXLE
This procedure involves measuring the distance between the 5th gear detent seat and selector fork and selecting the correct thickness retainer shim.
1. Shift the transaxle into 4th gear.
2. Remove the 5th gear retainer.

3. Using a depth gauge measure the distance from the retainer seat to the selector fork, Figure 2.
NOTE: MAKE SURE THE SELECTOR "D" (FIGURE 2) IS AGAINST THE 1ST/2ND GEAR DOG "E".

4. Using the chart in Figure 3, select the appropriate shim based on your measurement.
5. Install the appropriate shim on the new retainer.
6. Install the retainer and tighten to 19 N-m (14 ft.lbs.) torque.
