1.7L ENGINE DIAGNOSIS
In some 1985-87, 1.7L engines, abnormal engine oil consumption may be the result of oil leaking past the valve stem seals. Seal leakage may also cause engine ping and knock if carbon build-up occurs in the combustion chambers.
When diagnosis indicates valve stem seal leakage in a 1.7L engine, install seal, P/N 7700 737 124. This seal was recently released for both production and service use on 1.7L engines.
The new seals can not be installed with the cylinder head on the engine. The head and the valves must both be removed for seal replacement. An updated installation procedure is included in this I.S. Note.
Special tool Mot. ML.02, P/N 8981 320 994, is required to install the new seals. This tool must be used to avoid damaging the seals during installation. The tool is a required item and will be shipped to all dealers.
