PULLING DENTED PANELS/INSTALLING MOLDING RIVETS
Introduction
Body panel straightening equipment is available for effectively straightening dents. This equipment uses copper coated pins that are welded to the dented body panel with a welding gun. Once the pin is in place, a slide hammer is attached to the pin and the dent can be pulled out. This method is particularly useful in areas where partial or no access is available.
In situations where body molding rivets need replacing, the welding gun can be used to install new rivets.
This method offers the advantages of:
^ Time savings
^ Easy to use
^ Less costly than other repair methods
^ High quality repair

Kit Contents
The body panel straightening kit (Fig. 1) consists of the following:
^ A two electrode welding gun which has a stationary negative electrode and a positive electrode that holds the pin being welded to the body. The positive electrode retracts into the welding gun when the gun is positioned against the panel.
^ Two welding gun tips
1. One tip is for pin welding
2. One tip is for welding molding rivets
^ One slide hammer
^ Two boxes of pull pins
1. One box of one thousand pull pins with 2 mm (.078 in) heads
2. One box of five hundred pull pins with 2.6 mm (.203 in) heads
^ One box of five hundred molding rivets

Procedure
1. Grind off all paint or rust from the damaged area. Clean the bare metal to insure a good weld (fig. 2).
FIGURE 3:
2. Place the pin (A) into the center of the electrode (B) and align it on the panel (Fig. 3).
FIGURE 4:
3. Press the electrode firmly against the damaged panel until the outer ring (C) rests squarely against the bare metal (D) (Fig. 4). Pull the trigger and release it immediately.
FIGURE 5:
4. Slide the chuck (E) (Fig. 5) of the slide hammer over the pin leaving enough gap between the tool and the panel to allow visual observation of the panel as it is pulled out.
5. Pull the dent out by sliding the hammer outward away from the dent. Release the stress ridge of the dent with a body hammer.
6. Snip off the pins when the dent is pulled out satisfactorily.
CAUTION: When grinding the pin head off, do not overheat the panel or distortion may result.
7. Grind the pin head off as close to the body panel as possible.
8. Complete the metal finishing and paint application as necessary.

Molding Rivet Installation
1. Check the electrode (F) (Fig. 6) of the welding gun to insure that it is clean.
2. Mark the spot on the body panel where the molding rivet is to be welded.
3. Insert the molding rivet (G) (Fig. 6) into the electrode of the welding gun and place the electrode firmly on the body panel. Pull the trigger and release it immediately.
CAUTION: In either application, It is not necessary to have a noticeable blue ring around the pin or rivet in order for the weld to hold properly.
